The singer in the song has given in to the temptations of mediocrity, and with society conspiring against manhood, he finds himself lost in a world of highs, forgetting what's low. The loss of a friend, who is also a victim of apathy and circumstances, adds to the message of the song.
As the song progresses, the chorus keeps repeating admonishments to the singer to "save yourself" and "live your life" but at every turn, the singer is hesitant to do so. The song ends with a vitriolic scream directed at the perpetuators of their own misery who refuse to take command of their lives.
