That is the problem. This is a unicorn stop. He knew how to act. Wasn’t nervous or jumpy. Was complicit. Honest. He had no ego, the cops had no ego. He was literate and sober. The cops were positive weren’t trying to be hero.

You change any of that. And people end up shouting at eachother. Adrenaline intervenes and then someone’s shot.
This isn’t a case study, it a perfect outlier when human beings. Weapons and illegal activity are involved. Very few people are accountable for their actions and will try to avoid it at any cost.

Dude was chill and upfront, and most cops will try not to escelate when the person is both armed and polite - mainly out of caution and self preservation.

Reason being is a polite armed criminal will generally remain calm and polite as long as officers act as if they're just giving a warning or ticket. This changes if an armed criminal thinks he's getting arrested. Procedure in this case is to act casual, remain in cover and wait for backup if an arrest warrant pops up.

There's generally more respect paid towards armed polite decent people too, simply because bullying them can go south in unfun ways. It's a very strong argument for the 2nd amendment.

Could also be cops are nice, but that's really hit and miss in cities.

Aside from this being an all-around fantastic citizen/police encounter, I feel I actually learned a lot too. Sometimes knowing what the police are legally allowed to do to ensure their safety is the best education towards helping people having these kinds of respectful interactions. Truthfully. It seemed to me like the instructors KNOWLEDGE of what the police could and would most likely want to do in the circumstances... is what immediately put everyone into a position of mutual understanding and above all... respect for oneanother.

There was an assumption on the part of the cops. They assume that, just because he had firearms that he was dangerous, i just because the words armed and dangerous are together in the same sentence. Does it mean that they are linked to each other their discrete ideas you can be armed and you can also be dangerous just because you’re armed does not imply that you’re dangerous and it seems that the only factor they use in determining whether or not he was dangerous was that he was armed . now you could also argue that they did it because of his race but we don’t have any proof of that, so we will ignore that.

One reason this encounter went well, aside from the abilities of the cops involved, was that the driver was giving a lot of positive cues. He kept his hands visible and relaxed he looked at the officers when speaking, he explained his situation very straightforwardly and did not play 20 questions, he wasn't giving off any of the "lost in thought" cues that often presage an attack or flight. There is a lot of unconscious back and forth between people in these stops that experienced people will recognize in hindsight.

I been pulled over 25 times this year(doing rideshare with tints) although it wasn’t pleasant to get pulled over most officers were respectful and I was respectful back, only about 5 officers ever asked if I had a firearm in the vehicle and 3 of them disarmed me once I informed me, the others said cool and let me go. The worst police interaction came to me in April, where I was driving all day and I was tired and just arrived home. There was a call of a domestic dispute on my neighbors and there were police in the area but I parked away from the scene and as soon as I walked towards on my apartment a car showed up and immediately started asking me questions and with the officers visibly shaking , next thing you know they get out and touch me before allowing me to answer their barrage of questions and found a gun on me which escalated the situation. They said I matched the description… I left my id in my car which was about 5 cars down, and 4 more police cars showed up and I thought I was doomed as young black male in the dark with police at 11 pm in Chicago, in a situation that looked very damning. My neighbors were screaming free me making me look even more guilty, but thankfully they saw my name was clear and I was licensed to carry. Moral of the story the extra attention ain’t worth it, cause all it takes is one bad interaction, and you should definitely keep your credentials on you at all times. Once I get my car repaired i will lessen the tints, but be careful ands always best to comply at first.

I love how the male cop on the passenger side of the vehicle connected with him on a personal level, he spoke to the driver in the manner in which the driver was used to, instead of asking the driver a million questions he just let the driver tell his entire story without interrupting him too much, they clearly articulated to him what they were obligated to do and did so with an amazing amount of respect and understanding. I don't know about US, but in Brazil the law states that you shouldn't carry your firearms unloaded, you have to carry it ready to use in case you have to defend yourself from any attempt to forcefully seize the firearm. That if you're one of the rare people that are allowed to carry a firearm.

The truth is that its not uncommon at all, its just that cops doing the right thing isnt as interesting as them doing the wrong thing. Nobody is gonna make a video titled: "cop conducts a traffic stop and lets man go with a warning". The only reason this particular video was even made was because the dude looks like hes on his way to fight off an entire army singlehandedly.

All around a good job of both sides of this interaction. A couple of small things that are arguable though.

1. If you are armed, it may not be the very best idea to be waving your hands around as much as we saw Mr. Guns doing. You really want to make the officers feel as comfortable with you as possible and while Mr. Guns had an awesome attitude throughout the encounter, you have to keep in mind your body language as well. We see Mr. Guns emphatically put his hands on the steering wheel at one point to show he was keeping his hands visible, but only briefly. It would have been best to actually keep his hands on the steering wheel at all times unless asked to do otherwise. It's a small thing and the officers handled it very well but in these situations, where firearms are involved, small things can mean the difference between life and death when the wrong person is involved, like an officer that isn't so cool-headed as these ones were.

2. It may not have actually been the best idea to get Mr. Guns out of the vehicle. Let's assume Mr. Guns really was a dangerous individual (and there's no reason to pull him out of the vehicle if he isn't dangerous). You are now forcing a transition of spaces with an armed individual. You are forcing movement, and expecting movement and transitioning Mr. Guns from a confined space where he can only face one direction and has limited ability to move into an open space where he has more mobility and ability to fight if he so chooses. In the process of having him step out of the vehicle, and expecting that whole body movement, it would have given Mr. Guns increased opportunity to draw a firearm without it registering to officers that he was doing it. Once out of the vehicle, the officers now also have put themselves in a position where they could be physically assaulted, which could serve as a distraction or temporarily disable one of the officers while Mr. Guns drew a firearm. It also creates the potential for movements to be misinterpreted by the officers. Taking Mr. Guns out of the vehicle arguably escalates the risk of the situation rather than mitigating the risk unless Mr. Guns is successfully disarmed by the time it's over, in which case he wouldn't have been a threat anyway if you had left him in the vehicle. The chest mounted pistol could have been removed while Mr. Guns was still sitting in the driver's seat. It may have been a better option to do so, have Mr. Guns tighten and lock his seat belt so that he could not lift his hips to draw his concealed pistol, take the keys to the car and have him keep his hands on the wheel. For the police, that's the safest place for Mr. Guns to be. For him to actually become a serious threat he would have to unbuckle himself to draw his firearm and step out of the vehicle to engage the officers. Even if he might do so, it is far less likely if he couldn't make a quick escape by driving away because the officers are holding his car keys.

Thank you to the officers involved, wether or not they recognized him.. Good job and did a service for all leo's. Hope it rubs off.. I'm from Baltimore and I've seen a lot of bad cops, but every time I've been pulled over I was respectful and so were they. So there are alot of good ones as well.
I also have a wear & carry license sometimes open carry and have never had anyone stop me yet...fingers crossed.

Cops direction on the traffic stop really took a turn completely once the who gun interaction began. This allowed the driver to walk away Scott free because they could have at the very least given him a ticket, but for expired tags usually they impound your vehicle and add ex amount of fines. Overall good interaction between both parties.

Kudos Mr. Gun's happens to be well spoken/calm appearing man. I'd advise against removing and passing officers your firearm even if asked while you're being detained even if they ask. Let them reach for remove it themselves. Keep your hands up stay calm.
