Perry and Hamilton, originally in a band together called the Jam Band, met up with Tyler, Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano, and formed Aerosmith; in 1971, Tabano was replaced by Whitford. They released a string of multi-platinum albums starting with their eponymous debut in 1973, followed by Get Your Wings in 1974. The band broke into the mainstream with Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976). Draw the Line and Night in the Ruts followed in 1977 and 1979. Throughout the 1970s, the band toured extensively and charted a dozen Hot 100 singles, including their first Top 40 hit "Sweet Emotion" and the Top 10 hits "Dream On" and "Walk This Way". By the end of the decade, they were among the most popular hard rock bands in the world and developed a following of fans, often referred to as the "Blue Army". Drug addiction and internal conflict led to the departures of Perry and Whitford in 1979 and 1981. The band did not fare well and the album Rock in a Hard Place (1982) failed to match previous successes.
Perry and Whitford returned to Aerosmith in 1984. After a comeback tour, they recorded Done with Mirrors (1985), which did not meet commercial expectations. It was not until a 1986 collaboration with rap group Run-D.M.C. on a remake of "Walk This Way", and the 1987 multi-platinum release, Permanent Vacation, that they regained their previous level of popularity. In the late 1980s and 1990s, the band won numerous awards for music from the multi-platinum albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997), while they embarked on their most extensive concert tours to date. Their biggest hits during this period included "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", "Angel", "Rag Doll", "Love in an Elevator", "Janie's Got a Gun", "What it Takes", "Livin' on the Edge", "Cryin'", and "Crazy". The band also filmed popular music videos and made notable appearances in television, film, and video games. In 1998, they achieved their first number-one hit with "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" from Armageddon's soundtrack and the following year, their roller coaster attraction opened at Walt Disney World. Their comeback has been described as one of the most remarkable and spectacular in rock history. Additional albums Just Push Play (which included the hit "Jaded"), Honkin' on Bobo (a collection of blues covers), and Music from Another Dimension! followed in 2001, 2004, and 2012. In 2008, they released Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which is considered to be the best-selling band-centric video game. After five decades, the band continues to tour and record music. From 2019–2022, the band had a concert residency in Las Vegas, which was interrupted from 2020–2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aerosmith is the best-selling American hard rock band of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide, including over 85 million records in the United States. With 25 gold, 18 platinum, and 12 multi-platinum albums, they hold the record for the most total certifications by an American group and are tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American group. They have achieved twenty-one Top 40 hits on the US Hot 100, nine number-one Mainstream Rock hits, four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and were ranked number 57 and 30, respectively, on Rolling Stone's and VH1's lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2013, Tyler and Perry were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2020, the band received the MusiCares Person of the Year award.

Hole in My Soul
Aerosmith Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a one night stand
With a one track mind
Out in no man's land
The punishment sometimes
Don't seem to fit the crime
Yeah there's a hole in my soul
For every love letter written
There's another one burned
So you tell me how it's gonna be this time
Is it over?
Is it over?
'Cause I'm blowin' out the flame
Take a walk outside your mind
Tell me how it feels to be The one who turns
The knife inside of me
Take a look and you will find
There's nothing there, girl
Yeah I swear, I'm telling you, girl yeah "Cause
There's a hole in my soul
That's been killing me forever
It's a place where a garden never grows
There's a hole in my soul
Yeah, I should have known better
'Cause your love's like a thorn without a rose
Yeah, yeah
I'm as dry as a seven year drought
I got dust for tears Yeah I'm all tapped out
Sometimes I feel broken can't get fixed
I know there's been all kinds of shoes
Underneath your bed
Now I sleep with my boots on
But you're still in my head
And something tells me this time
I'm down to my last licks
'Cause if it's over
Then it's over
And it's driving me insane
Take a walk outside your mind
Tell me how it feels to be
The one who turns the knife inside of me
Take a look and you will find
There's nothing there, girl, yeah, I swear
I'm telling you girl yeah "Cause
There's a hole in my soul
That's been killing me forever
It's a place where a garden never grows
There's a hole in my soul
Yeah, I should have known better
'Cause your love's like a thorn without a rose
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, is it over?
Yeah, it's over
And I'm blowing out the flame
Take a walk outside your mind
Tell me how it feels to be
The one who turns the knife inside of me
Take a look and you will find
There's nothing there, girl, yeah, I swear
I'm telling you girl yeah "Cause
There's a hole in my soul
That's been killing me forever
It's a place where a garden never grows
There's a hole in my soul
Yeah, I should have known better
'Cause your love's like a thorn without a rose
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(Good night Taj, good night Chelsea cha!)
The lyrics to "Hole in My Soul" by Aerosmith are a reflection of the emotional pain and struggle that the singer is experiencing in the aftermath of a failed relationship. The first verse sets the scene of a one-night stand and the emptiness that comes with it, as the singer is alone in "no man's land" with a "one-track mind" that leads to punishment that doesn't seem to fit the crime. The chorus reveals that this emptiness is due to a "hole in my soul" that has been killing the singer forever, a place where nothing can grow and where the love that they experienced was like a "thorn without a rose."
The second verse appears to be an address to the former partner, asking them how it feels to be the one causing the pain and turning the knife inside the singer. The bridge is a repetition of the chorus with a plea to take a walk outside your mind and see that there is nothing left inside, and that the flame is blown out. The song concludes with the same chorus, emphasizing the deep and long-lasting pain that the singer is experiencing.
Overall, "Hole in My Soul" is a poignant reflection on the deep emotional pain of lost love and the sense of emptiness and longing that follows. It speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and the struggle to move on from a painful past.

I'm down a one way street
I feel stuck in a one-way path, with no other way to move forward
With a one night stand
I had a fling that was over before it began

All I can think about is one thing, and it's dragging me down
Out in no man's land
I feel lost and isolated, like I don't belong anywhere
The punishment sometimes
The consequences of my actions don't always seem fair or justified
Don't seem to fit the crime
It feels like my mistakes are being punished too harshly
Yeah there's a hole in my soul
I feel empty and incomplete inside
But one thing I've learned
I've realized something important
For every love letter written
For every expression of love and affection
There's another one burned
There's another failed relationship or heartbreak to deal with
So you tell me how it's gonna be this time
I'm unsure how this relationship will turn out
Is it over?
Is this the end?
Is it over?
I need to know if it's really over

The one who turns
You're the one who is causing pain

Take a look and you will find

There's nothing there, girl
There's nothing left between us

I promise you, this is the truth
That's been killing me forever
This emptiness inside has been haunting me for a long time
It's a place where a garden never grows
Nothing good or beautiful ever seems to grow in this space inside of me
Yeah, I should have known better
I admit that I made a mistake by getting involved with you again
'Cause your love's like a thorn without a rose
Your love feels painful and empty, like a thorn without the beauty of a rose
I'm as dry as a seven year drought

But you're still in my head
I can't stop thinking about you even when I try
And something tells me this time
I have a feeling that this is the last straw
I'm down to my last licks
I'm running out of strength and patience
'Cause if it's over
If this is really the end
Then it's over
I need to accept it
And it's driving me insane
It's making me crazy to think about
That's been killing me forever
This emptiness inside has been haunting me for a long time
It's a place where a garden never grows
Nothing good or beautiful ever seems to grow in this space inside of me
Yeah, I should have known better
I admit that I made a mistake by getting involved with you again

What a song! A masterpiece. It's just unbelievable how chords and vocals can be put into such an amazing harmony. And the moment the verse flows into the chorus is utterly outstanding!!!
