Ancient Verses
Aesma Daeva Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Now we destroy our ancient verse, our history
The eyes of my comrades watching, they haunt me
Dream a sinking ship in waters green
Death down to fate
My sacrifice, sorrow fathoms deep
The vision of a golden country, it haunts me
Dome of fragile glass: hunger to thieve
Children shelter in paper arms, stolen refugees
The torture to confess not to betray, Love Ministry
Cold-hearted secrets lie mute in ice, no tongue to speak
What's always been and always it shall be lost to lies
These icy tongues of wordless thoughts
They've never been and never they shall be
The lyrics of Aesma Daeva's song "Ancient Verses" lament the loss of our cultural heritage and history. The first line, "Once there was myth and mystery," references a time when our ancestors imbued the world around them with meaning and significance. However, the second line reveals a stark and unfortunate contrast - we now destroy that heritage and history. The singer of the song is haunted by the watching eyes of their comrades, who may also feel the weight of this loss.
The following lines take on a more personal, mournful tone. The singer dreams of a sinking ship in waters green, which could represent the collective memory of a culture slowly fading away. They then mention their own sacrifice and deep sorrow. Despite this, the singer still holds onto a vision of a golden country - a memory that also haunts them, perhaps as a symbol of what was once possible when our culture was more connected to its history.
The last part of the song is more cryptic. The "Dome of fragile glass" could represent a place where our most valuable cultural artifacts are housed or displayed. Then we hear about "stolen refugees" and a "Love Ministry" - perhaps these are references to specific historical events known to the singer. Finally, the song ends with a sense of hopelessness. The "icy tongues of wordless thoughts" could be a metaphor for the way memories and history can become frozen and lost forever.

I kind of agree with you. Simone makes a lot of mistakes live and Melissa's very polished in everything she does. But I also think that Simone challenges herself more than most vocalists in the genre, writing vocal lines that are difficult for her and barely in her range, and through singing them on tour improves rapidly for the next album. I have an Epica cover on my page, actually. If anyone wants to check it out I'd greatly appreciate it. :)
