Bavitz was born in Syosset, New York and grew up in Northport, New York. While attending college, Bavitz initially recorded and released two self-financed efforts, Music for Earthworms (1997), a full-length featuring underground artist Percee P on two tracks. Bavitz also released a music video to "Abandon All Hope", which was one of the tracks on the CD. The album sold over 300 copies, largely from a grassroots internet-based promotion at his website AesopRock.com and then-popular web portal, MP3.Com. It was a success. With the money he made from his previous release, he then released his Appleseed EP in 1999 which received critical acclaim in the underground hip hop circuit.[citation needed] Both of his early records were produced by long-time friend Blockhead, and underground producer Dub-L. He completed these albums while also working as a waiter.
After his breakthrough success in the underground hip hop and indie rap community, he was eventually noticed by the Mush label and obtained his first record deal in 1999, just a year after he graduated from college. Aesop released his first major album, Float (2000), with guest appearances from Vast Aire, Slug, and Dose One. Production was split between Blockhead and Aesop himself, with one track by Omega One. During this time, Aesop worked at a photography gallery. In August 2001 tragedy struck when Bavitz had a nervous breakdown. The song "One of Four" on his Daylight EP documents his struggles.
Shortly after releasing Float, Aesop Rock signed to Manhattan-based label Definitive Jux (commonly shortened to Def Jux), where he released Labor Days (2001), an album dedicated to the discussion of labor in American society and the concept of "wage slaves". This album was most well known for its single "Daylight". Because of its popularity, Daylight was re-released in 2002 as a seven-track EP, including an "alternative" new version of the song "Night Light", whose paraphrased lyrics simultaneously refer back to, and stand in stark opposition to, the original's. The song "Labor" (from Labor Days) was featured in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4; it also was the first album in his catalog to break through the Billboard charts, peaking at number 15 at the United States Independent Charts, giving Aesop Rock more recognition.
Labor Days was followed by Bazooka Tooth in 2003. For the first time, production was mostly handled by Rock himself, with three tracks from longtime collaborator Blockhead and one from close friend and Definitive Jux label CEO El-P. Guest appearances include Party Fun Action Committee, El-P, and Mr. Lif (all Definitive Jux labelmates) and Camp Lo. With this release Aesop hit a higher level of recognition, releasing "No Jumper Cables" as a single and music video, then another single, "Freeze", shortly after. A remix of "No Jumper Cables" was featured on Tony Hawk's Underground 2, furthering Aesop's recognition. In 2004, He released Build Your Own Bazooka Tooth and created a contest in which you had to create a remix of an Aesop Rock song using the a cappellas and instrumentals.
In February 2005, Aesop Rock released a new EP, Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives. The first pressing of the EP included an 88-page booklet with lyrics from every release from Float until this EP (the lyric booklet is titled The Living Human Curiosity Sideshow); later pressings of the album come without the booklet, but with an additional bonus track, "Facemelter". In addition, a limited number of albums were available direct from Def Jux with Aesop Rock's graffiti tag on them. In response to demands from his fans, Rock did less production on the EP: three songs are produced by Blockhead, three produced by Aesop, and one by Rob Sonic. During this time he was asked to join The Weathermen to replace Vast Aire.
Aesop Rock was commissioned to create a 45-minute instrumental track for the Nike+iPod running system, entitled All Day. It was released in February 2007. Distributed via the iTunes Music Store and featuring his wife Allyson Baker on guitar and scratches from DJ Big Wiz, Aesop has described the release as "something that evolved enough that the sound was constantly fresh and attractive, as though the runner were moving through a set of differing cities or landscapes."
All Day was followed in August of the same year by Bavitz's fifth full-length album, None Shall Pass released in 2007. The album also contained original artwork by Jeremy Fish. About Jeremy Fish, Aesop Rock said: "Man that guy is my hero. We have a friend in common who hit me up a while back saying that this guy Jeremy Fish had an opportunity to pitch a cartoon to Disney and wanted me to be involved in the music side. I flipped out cuz I was also a fan of his, and owned some of his work." Aesop Rock also teamed up with Jeremy Fish again in a project called Ghosts of the Barbary Coast. Aesop Rock made a song called "Tomorrow Morning", to go along with a slideshow of drawings that Jeremy Fish drew. This was displayed in San Francisco, but was also made available for download online. None Shall Pass had positive reviews from critics and fans, applauding Aesop for his change in sound.
In 2011, Rhymesayers released "Are You Going to Eat That?", the debut album from Hail Mary Mallon, a collaboration between Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz.
On July 10, 2012, Rhymesayers released Aesop Rock's sixth studio album, "Skelethon". Its first single, "Zero Dark Thirty", was released four months earlier on April 10. A second single, "ZZZ Top", was released on June 29.
In 2011, Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson of The Moldy Peaches formed the duo The Uncluded. The duo's debut album, "Hokey Fright" was released on May 7, 2013.
In 2018, Aesop Rock teamed up with TOBACCO to form Malibu Ken

The song "Rickety Rackety" by Aesop Rock featuring CamuTao and El-P is a reflection of city life that focuses on the gritty reality of the streets. The lyrics delve into the dark reality of the city with lines like "I pack a lunchbox, walk to the stoning, jump into the chemicals sold in my zoning" which depicts the singer using drugs to escape reality.
Aesop Rock's verse reflects the chaos and mayhem of the city and how he reacts to it. The line "smack dab in the middle of the cuddles and kills" could be a metaphor for how he finds himself trapped in the midst of the city's highs and lows. He also talks about rating people he meets to determine if he hates them or not, suggesting that he has to keep his guard up to survive in this environment.
El-P's verse focuses on the political and social issues that weigh on the people living in the city. He talks about the pain and suffering that people face and how those in power need to address these issues. The line "respectively injecting these thoughts, detain us" could be seen as a reference to how society tends to suppress any dissenting voices.
Camu Tao's verse talks about the violent nature of the city and how people try to escape it. He highlights the need to medicate the pain from the violence, and he also talks about how people are constantly looking for ways to exploit others for their own gain.
Overall, "Rickety Rackety" is a powerful and evocative narrative of what it means to live in the city and navigate the dangers and pitfalls that come with it.

Tasmanian pain coast, ridin'. Very little to say to these politician behind it but this: you better loosen the noose or lose livin'. These little kids walking the ave. quick to produce a biscuit.
I ride along the Pain Coast of Tasmania, not having much to say to the politicians who created the situation. They need to release their control or risk death. The innocent children on the street quickly reach for their guns, ready to take action.
Now you should medicate any area that the pain hits. And when you in the streets you should peep the sets of strangers. The actors that are in fact a cast of chaos. If you're in pain, treat it accordingly. When you're outside, be wary of unfamiliar groups. They create chaos and look for opportunities to cause trouble. Their idea is to insert their perspective into ours and control us. They are negative and manipulative, and when we are vulnerable, they work to save us. With hindsight, they infect our minds and exert control over our thoughts.

I craft lyrics that attack emotional pain head-on. I am raw and unfiltered, even in my use of old-fashioned equipment. My expertise comes from a degree in numbing pain. Angels on the rooftop carry weapons that they use to defend themselves.
I was buried to the neck in them all-start bloopers. Periscope down, hop Boss Hog cruiser. Porcelain or pewter authority wil be over ruled the second jukie uber alles news hit the sewers.
I was trapped in unfavorable situations. I had to use a periscope to escape and managed to board a Boss Hog cruiser. The fake authority is overthrown the moment drug-related news reaches the public.

When you take 2 to the vein, introduce 2 to the brain. You don't get used to the pain. A maniac bruising the cage. When cats rush you in the public you be like 'do it again'. He's a motherfucking bloodsucker, he can do what he can.
When you take drugs, it affects not only your veins but also your brain. The pain does not diminish over time. You're like a caged animal hurting yourself in frustration. When people confront you, you don't back down. The person in question is a predator who will do anything to achieve their goals.
On the side of the block, do the bus stop. You paying a fare? That's a trust fund. Little ugly ass duck, life's a fun fuck. Too battered to rush, I walk punch drunk. And the whole world is yours now. Before the steppers are goosed kick your door down. I'm in the getaway whip with Aes Rizzle. He got the same shit stitched in his missles.
On the street corner, people dance to the bus stop beat. Paying your fare is like investing. Sometimes life is strange and absurd. I'm too beat up to move quickly, so I stumble along. The whole world is your oyster. Take advantage of it before someone else does. I'm in a fast car with Aes Rizzle, who is dealing with the same issues.
O.k. lefty field... stealth. Dressed to kill... self. Megawatt with a horizontal neck spin swim funny to vertical bobble head yes men.
I'm changing tactics but still staying concealed. My image kills, but it's just for me. I am powerful and confident, but I can have fun, too.
When the evil falls in it draws to the pours, it gnaws to the core. It's precedented that you represented a percentage that wasn't vintage and the crawlers hate us, you automated, we brought the flavors, niggas you ought to hate us.
When evil is present, it penetrates deeply and affects us. But it's not surprising since we represent a new generation and that bothers some people. We are different than the previous generation, so they resent us. However, they are stuck in their ways, and we bring a fresh perspective.
This nerd rap is a bird trap, my words jap the ??? backstage and get they fur tapped. Little kids running with scissors want to check me. Accidents don't happen. Stupid plants come correctly.
My rhymes trap people like birds in a cage. My words sting those who criticize from behind the scenes. Children with knives try to test me. There is no such thing as an accident when everything is part of a plan. Only those who don't think things through end up making errors.
Don't picket the misfit law, Nancy. The core's no picnic. Mislead whores advancing. No business. Insist lured with candy to cure citizen x with that all-rours dancing. Corporals landing ashore, all soar boned nitwit, rickety rackety porn fancy. Weave through the hell and high water hot zone, diseases in the minute the idiot got home.
Don't criticize those who don't fit into society's standards, Nancy. The center of problems is not a pleasant place to be. Those who exploit others are unacceptable. It's useless to try and tempt us with shallow incentives if you're trying to hide your true intentions. Military personnel landing ashore are trying to stop stupidly greedy individuals who use porn as their tool. It's hard to survive amongst chaos and danger, where seemingly small actions can lead to disastrous outcomes.
Now I'm a teacher, 1st grade, and I want to participate. I want to grade the papers but I don't want to give them A's. O.k. F, D, F-, test time, set timers, call every parent and give 'em a piece of my mind, shit. 'cause I don't want to give a good future, I'll shoot ya. Shoot ya? With an Uzi filled with rulers. Fuck minors, flush minds. Even leaving 'em bruised up. Stack kids, pack cute lunches in the cooler.
Now I'm a first-grade teacher who wants to play a part. However, I don't want to give anyone good grades. I'll reconsider giving F's or D's with possible F-'s on tests and set a timer. Then I'll call the parents and let them know how I feel. I won't give them a good future; I'll give them a violent one. If necessary, I'll injure them with weapons. I'll ruin their minds and leave them battered. I'll stack kids on top of each other and pack them lunches to eat in the cooler.
Rickety Rackety. This city fit my style exactly. Near the fire ladder, where the wires gather, drink water, eat fish, smile after. Rickety Rackety, this pussy fit my dick exactly. With a threesome, giving treatment, sex on drugs, girl you can't keep up.
This city fits my style perfectly. I reside near the fire ladder where wires converge. I indulge in simple pleasures like drinking water, eating fish, and then smiling. This city caters to my sexual desires flawlessly. I engage in threesomes, take drugs to enhance the experience, and am too much for most women to handle.
