…I got ‘intimidated’ because they were a jazz group. But as they went on, I stopped caring about genre and just took each song as its own little performance, and I loved them all—even the first when I went back to it. ((And I don’t listen to jazz usually, had no exposure to it before, I just like how each song sounded.)) Genre isn’t the problem—it’s bias

I don't understand the judges when it comes to Afro Blue. They keep telling them not to over think it and that their songs are over their heads, but then when they simplify their performance the judges hit them for not doing what they do so well. I'm sure that after this performance they were thoroughly confused.

I really love the fresh take the gave the song and made it sound more relevant to the style at that time...why choose a rock song for a jazz group anyway if you wanted it to stay the same -- very odd I actually liked this performance and felt the critique was overly harsh tbh.

+David Mitchell Maybe the judges criticisms were confusing. But at the same time, I think Afro Blue deserved some criticism for this performance because it just wasn't rock. there was still too much of their R&B. And while i love R&B, this is supposed to be a rock performance. Maybe it was just the song choice, but it wasn't a very powerful delivery like rock is supposed to be. Yes, Afro Blue has a great natural blend, but with this one, they didn't show that they could be versatile enough to keep that natural blend together while going out of their comfort zone

I wonder what Tom Petty's thought would be on it. I think they nailed every song, unlike Pentatonix who had some serious problems with certain styles. They incorporated their jazz stylings into every song and pulled it off and made it accessible. While I like Ben Folds, who does know his stuff, I think sometimes he was being critical just to be the nay sayer on the panel. 4th place, really. I'm still trying to rap my mind around that choice.

The issue is you can't tell a group not over think it (or do anything in general) and then be surprised when they listen to you. The judging was horrible that year.

Ben said that he didn't like the National Anthem incorporated in the song. But honestly it was amazing to hear the anthem with the song. An amazing transition into the next segment of the song

wow, i am reading some of the commentary and I can't believe some of what I am reading. CLEARLY this group is a the TOP of the talent pool. I am quite sure that Pentatonix and AB would be the only two groups this season that would sell records. The judges this week confused me with their commentary. I think they gave a rock song some autotuning and now this song can be enjoyed by multiple listening groups. UKKKK

It appears to be laidback, but it can be a bit hectic. And emotional can be fast (anger/lust), slow (sadness), midpace (anything in between). I think it's just that the chords in jazz can be complex.This doesn't mean that jazz is better than mainstream pop. It's just that there are sometimes so many chords that are played at once. For some people, it just sounds very off, and it doesn't suit well with them. Remember when BF jokes about AB and their 20 part harmonies?

I agree with the judges: this group is probably the most talented from a musical, compositional perspective but I find it harder to connect to what they're doing than with some of the others. Maybe I just don't have enough practice listening to jazz or maybe it's something inherent in the jazz style: it's laid back rather than emotional.

Afro Blue were awesome, but I can kind of understand why the judges comments were all over the place. I could never put my finger on what they were doing wrong, but often they didn't connect with me at all. Musically, Urban Method was FAR less talented, but they connected more in the end.

I agree with your comment about America girl though. But see, the original singer did the national anthem with it live

You know, I think this whole debate on whether or not doing jazz hurt them (musical complexity vs. connecting with the audience) isn't the best point. See, I think the reason a lot of people 'don't get/like jazz,’ is the same reason people don't like/get Shakespeare—they automatically assume it's too hard to understand. That's the reason I didn't love AB's first performance the first time I heard it, [cont’d]

I think Afro-Blue totally deserved to be in the top 3 over Urban Method because they are awesome musicians. But, they really weren't good performers until near the end, when they finally just let themselves go in the music. The problem at the beginning was that they took songs and made them so complex that they were no longer accessible because of how much was going on, nor were they enjoyable because they just didn't seem to be feeling the music or having any fun.

I really do like this group, and I think they are very talented, but frankly I thought this song was a mess. I'd like to listen to Afro-Blue doing what they do - not when they are forced to try to sing a genre that isn't natural to them.

For their medley they did too much. The rhythm was almost the same throughout, and when you first hear it it is very difficult to enjoy the song. Personally i think it is great and i love it even more every time i hear it. They should have at least had 3rd place.

@MrButler124 Actually, I think they made a good choice by going the "smart, jazzy" route, but they didn't follow through to the end. Even Ben sez "the top was especially good". This epic rock anthem is made whole by going out with a ridiculous guitar solo. You can't replicate that guitar solo, so what do you do? You do it the AB way.

@michaelstokowski I think they had the chance to render a great jazz-anthem version of the song up until about 1:59, where the chords at "It was a great big world" reach perfection; then they felt they had to fall back into rock. Too bad. I think if they had kept up the jazzified direction they had until there, the National Anthem would have worked, and the judges would have been unseated at the end, and we would be buying AB records already.

@MrButler124 What I meant by accessible is that because the music was so complex, it's like a wall was put up so we couldn't really feel the song. It sounds nice sure, but it isn't called for. For example, American Girl is a very powerful song, and I just didn't feel any emotion behind it, because it was stripped of what it was. So while every other group embraced the raw power of rock they shied away from it, and I felt that the National Anthem thrown in was just plain gimmicky.

I like them, I think they're talented but throwing in the national anthem bit was, to me, completely out of place. I go even further with it : does anyone else think they felt uncomfortable with the genre and found a convenient way to try to appeal to the masses by throwing in that stupid bit? Because that's where I went with it, kinda transparent.

@lyndes33 to be honest, I think people use that as an excuse. Yes, they're songs were complex, the arrangement, rhythm, etc, but not enough to get lost. And the beginning songs were happy and a lot of fun and all that, so they did a good job in adding that touch. Too be hoenst, I that the jugdes were slow for gettin lost like that. But I guess not everybody can keep up with jazz.

Alright people, once you have gone out and become hugely successful musicians you will have earned the right to be ugly about the judges. Until you have....SHUT THE HELL UP!!!! They never contradicted themselves. They WERE trying to help these guys find a better balance between complex and simple. Unfortunately, as Sarah noted later on, they failed to be as clear as they intended to be. If they had been able to sit down with AB and explain in better detail then AB would not have been as confused, but trying to explain that stuff on the fly is not easy. Disagree with the judges all you like. Just don't act like they are ignorant and stupid. I guarantee they know more about this stuff than almost all of you.

BF told them to not dumb it down...but don't underestimate the power of a simple song..be complex, but make people not know that they just heard that...really dog? How you tell them two contradicting things? LMAOOOOOOOOOOoo! They have never been over our heads. This group is obviously doing stuff that none of the other groups can do. And I even think they phoned this one in and still killed it.

I don't know what the judges even think they want. like they want them to push the envelope, but they also them to stay true to a song. They want them to be complex, but be simple. Like, do they think before they talk whatsoever, like do they have a notepad? or are the comments just bouncing off the air in the brain

@raymondjackso25 I don't have an issue with benfolds but their critiques tend to be horrible, both sarah and his. Last week it was too complex. This week its too dumb. I think this group has the potential to win but the judges are making it obvious that they aren't going to win by giving them contradicting critiques each week.

Let's face it, Pentatonix knew at this point that Afro Blue was the competition from a sheer talent and record-making-potential standpoint. Watch Tonix' reaction to every AB tune. Listen to the entire show from beginning to end, and it is hard not to see AB getting the record contract, because they are the group that has the chops to make to a sellable record. Tom Petty is one of my favorite rockers, and this is song is an epic anthem. This jazzy arrangement nailed it up to about 2 minutes in.

The judges didn't make them lose & the judges did not contradict themeselves. When they said it was too complex last week, they meant "too complex" and this week it wasn't complex enough . Do u get it? It is like a meter from 1-10 & sometimes u have to know which number to choose.. So for example with last week they were @ 10 complexity & this week maybe a 3 for complexity. Basically certain sounds & certain songs need to be sang a certain way to catch the attention of the audience. I hope you

I would. My daddy would. A couple of my friends would. And I'm sure they have family and friends that would and then they would as well. Plus, I have friends and family on four continents and they in turn have family and friends all over the world. At any rate, you have just proven why PTX won. They do mainstream. AB does not. So they loose. I know it's hard to get for many but not everyone cares for music that's here today and gone tomorrow. There are still a lot of us who love other genres -even in acapella.
