So many memories of my deceased uncle, who was a jazz fanatic and aficionado. He had an EXTENSIVE vinyl jazz collection, which tragically, got thrown away when he moved Yeeears ago. I'm 45 going on 46 God willing. He would be blaring this record on the old record player encased in that rectangular wooden cabinet all Black families had back in the day. I was 4 or 5, when my unc showed me how to operate and change the records. It was also my job to turn the volume all the way up when John starts going off at 4:53. He would say "Toy turn it up now!" and we would relish in this amazing composition hardly able to hear ourselves think! My uncle drunk off malt liquor and little Ole me, HIGH off the tunes of this album reverberating from that old sound system.
Ok I'm in tears now 😐😢😢😢. Missing my uncle and those good old days at my Nanny's house, where a five year old fell in love with jazz...

Maybe it's just me,but when 'Trane comes in with that soprano sax 'scream' after the piano solo,sends chills down my spine. I forgot the year this came out but I still have it in perfect condition.(I'm 79yo)Never touched the grooves,only handled it by the label and edge as I do with all my records.

Today is Oct 25 my birthday, and I always listen to it on my Birthday.
A perfect take!
The buildup by McCoy and Elvin to the solo is one of the most powerful moments ever in recorded 🎵 music.
While I have heard many live versions by the same band, this is the ONE! The only one that captures the excitement of that build up moment!

Very few things in any medium can be called "the greatest of all time" without engaging in a degree of hyperbole but in the case of this quartet, no other is even close. All these years later this recording is still unmatched. In my opinion, it is in fact the BEST quartet of all time. Happy birthday McCoy.

I met McCoy Tyner in San Francisco. Went to a concert in Oakland. He shared with me a story about the famous gig at Bird land. The strings on the piano on which he was forced to play were "shot". He had to strike them very hard to make those iconic sounds that we hear on the album. I am honored to have met and visited with this great pianist. Thank you sir for a life-long memory. Hia says hi, and that she misses you too.

This is my favorite version. Trane comes in screaming after McCoy's solo. You can hear Elvin vocalize notes @5:13 "nanana". Very cool. Wish I could have been there for that.

For me, enjoyment of music is not about how difficult it is to play. It's the tone, mood, swingingness, sweetness, melancholy and joy; it's the interaction between players. One of the coolest things is how Coltrane establishes the theme, plays variations, then bows out for a large chunk of the song to let the other musicians shine. Then he returns with force. Thanks for posting this track.

Elvin was a very nice person, the one time I met him was after a gig at the Jazz Bakery here in LA when I helped him and his wife pack up his drumkit after the gig.

Elvin's drumming is incredible on this version of "Afro Blue." So is McCoy Tyner's piano solo and Jimmy Garrison's pulsating bass playing. If you are ever driving on a long trip one night or early morning and you need something to energize you, this is far better than any drug!

someone could and should write a long piece about how Elvin builds up the majesty and power to Coltranes soaring solo entrance. Theres 45 seconds or so of music there that is the most brilliant and powerful "alley oop" ever recorded. This particular couple of minutes of music in the middle of this tune has continually astonished me for the last 18 years EVERY damn time i hear it. Its divine. Its damn near inexplicable and miraculous.

I almost tear out what remains of my hair sometimes dwelling on the fact that Coltrane (and Charlie Parker) were before my time, and I never had a chance to see them perform live. Mind you, I have seen some GREAT acts in live performance...Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea and Bela Fleck, Esperanza Spaulding, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola...and McCoy Tyner to name just a few. Then I realize that I do get to hear these otherworldly performers any time I care to because they were recorded! That would be the real tragedy: if their genius had simply slipped into the ether without ever being captured for posterity. And for me. Thank God I live in the age of recorded music!

Yes, McCoy Tyner's solo is awesome, as is the one by Coltrane that comes afterwards. Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison are equally awesome. Elvin's drumming is just beyond description, so powerful and so intense. Jimmy Garrison is pulsating the whole time; listen carefully and you can hear him under or with Elvin's power thrashes.

Indeed a great interpretation of the Mongo Santamaria classic. The original LP did not credit the composition to Mongo Santamaria, but Coltrane personally wrote Mongo Sanamaria to apologize for that mishap.

I believe that this was Elvin's first gig back after getting out of prison for heroin. Roy Haynes filled in during that time. Listen to Haynes on "Live at Newport". He's great. A legend. The drum chair always belonged to Elvin, though. Elvin plays with such ferocity, literally like "being let out" to be free again. You can hear it in Trane's sound. Elvin is back. So beautiful.

You can hear it in four of them. Tyner's solo and Garrison's bass accompaniment are as awesome as Elvin's thunder bolts and Trane's cries.

Remember this was 1963. This was the year the US had Gemini rocket launches, a nine megaton Titan ICBM nuclear warhead, a civil rights march (Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech), and two acts of domestic terrorism, namely the September 15th firebombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama and President Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, Texas.

There was a lot of energy that year and obviously these four men picked up on a lot of it.

I am agnostic at best, but the John Coltrane Quartet may be the best argument I have seen for intelligent design. There is a Jazz Casual video of the John Coltrane Quartet performing this in San Francisco at a KQED studio - The original super group. The 1927 Yankees are often used as the example of the greatest assemblage of talent ever. I would argue that the John Coltrane, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner and Jimmy Garrison group are an unrealistic standard never to be equaled.

my dad had this in his collection of albums. Never thought to play it back then as i had no idea what jazz even was. he certainly never played this while the family was around. By far, the best version ever! I hate to argue the point, but I have heard Live in Japan, and in my considered opinion, there is no comparison
Live at Bird land, a once in a lifetime magical perfect performance. The very best ever!

Pardon me for saying this, but to me, mentioning heavy metal in the same breath is akin to some kind of blasphemy: Most ( not all, but 90%) of heavy metal is pure Devil music,
But Saint John Coltrane is pure GOD music, JAH'S MUSIC!
There is a total and fundamental qualitative difference!

I can believe you. I cried as a child when I heard Trane's Atlantic Records version of "My Favorite Things."

When I listen to his studio recording of "Alabama" my eyes still tear up. It almost feels like he was in the church when those girls were killed. That's how intense that composition is.

Your pretentious comment has no basis in reality other than he did Afro Blue in a similar style to my favorite things. Where love supreme comes in I don’t know. You just chose the two most famous Trane tracks an pretended like you heard some connection. How does Love Supreme have any connection to this track other than the same musicians played it?

えんえんとマッコイ、そのあとにどどーんと出てくるところ。
それに、エルヴィンのバシバシやってるところ。
