The oeuvr… Read Full Bio ↴Progressive rock band formed in Budapest, Hungary in 1986.
The oeuvre of After Crying stands unparalleled in Hungarian music palette, and is also rare in international comparison.
The aim of this creative community has ever been to compose contemporary, up-to-date classical music that is possible to understand for many people – since it uses elements of today’s everyday musical idiom; and at the same time is able to convey deep meaning at a high artistic level, dealing with serious issues of our time.
A kind of "up-to-date classical music" that addresses both its own contemporaries and eternity at the same time. On the stage, their regular instrumentarium ranges from classic-acoustic instruments (cello, trumpet, piano, flute) to the standard setup of a modern rock band. From time to time they play shows with a chamber or symphony orchestra. On their studio-albums countless variations of classical and modern compositional methods and instrumentation appear, from acoustic chamber lineup to 21st century symphonic and electronic sounds.
All these are mounted in an organic dramaturgy, where the pieces ranging from song-format to long instrumental compositions all find their appropriate content. While heavily influenced by Emerson, Lake and Palmer or King Crimson, they added a number of unique elements to their sound. Keyboard player Vedres Csaba was the primary composer during his tenure with the band, though others took up the slack without a significant change in style. After leaving, Csaba formed Townscream.

After Crying Lyrics

Látom a madarat a tó tükrén
Néma idő elnyelt rég
Látom a köveken az emlékét
Hangod a csend örvényén
Hallom a szívedet a tó mélyén
Látom a köveken az emlékét
Hangod csend
Hallom szíved föld mélyén
...madara tovaszáll, tünemény
köveken a hó
neved ez a szó
ez a hang,ez a csend
kavarog az örvény
beborít a mély
szíveden az éj
The lyrics of "Enigma" by After Crying are poetic and ambiguous, leaving much to the listener's interpretation. The opening lines suggest an observer looking at a bird on a lake's surface, which is both a beautiful and eerie image. The singer feels time has swallowed something irreplaceable, which could be a metaphor for lost youth or something more profound.
As the song progresses, the singer hears the sound of the water's vortex and the beating of a heart in the lake's depth. The idea is no longer just to observe but surrender to the mystery and experience it. The introduction conjures an image that's easy to grasp, but the rest of the text seemingly speaks of more ungraspable concepts. The phrase "beborít a mély" signifies becoming engulfed by depth or darkness, something that happens to the singer as they explore the enigma.
Overall, the text reads like an incantation, with repeated references to sound, ancient memories, and overwhelming darkness. The music reinforces this feeling with a haunting melody and dissonant harmonies, amplifying unease and mystery.
