Hailing from Baltimore Maryland, After Forever was founded for the sole purpose of recreating through live performance the music of the legendary Black Sabbath. Comprised of veteran musicians, After Forever celebrates this music with a passion borne through nearly three decades of formal study, influence and outright fanaticism. Estranged
After Forever Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every sign seems a delusion
And fills me with doubt
I shouldn't look for certainty
Among these disorderly impressions
But still I do...
Being estranged
Time shall shatter what we have built up
Being estranged
From the reliable
Don't even recognize the warmth
You always fulfilled me with
Break through my crystallized sphere and hold me
Enter my deepest inner self
Imprison the pain
Besieging in vain
It feels like I'm in the middle of a movie
Gazing at the script
It shows me new insights
Delighted by the bygone sufferings
But already waiting for the next ones
I bend forward and look between the ripples of the lake
It's the leading character...
Break through my crystallized sphere and hold me
Wherever you are
Deceitful memories mingled with reality
I hold myself to the timeless spell
Fascinated by never knowing if it really happened
The lyrics to "Estranged" by After Forever paint a vivid picture of someone who feels lost and uncertain, searching for clarity and a way to break through their own internal struggles. The opening lines describe this person as diving into a lake of "thousand faces," where every sign seems like a delusion and fills them with doubt. Despite knowing that they shouldn't look for certainty in these disorderly impressions, they still do. The chorus highlights the feeling of being estranged and losing touch with reality, while time threatens to shatter everything that they've built up.
The second verse speaks of the need to break through a crystallized sphere, to enter the "deepest inner self" and imprison the pain. The use of the word "besieging" implies that this pain is attacking them from all sides and is difficult to escape. The singer goes on to describe feeling like they're in the middle of a movie, gazing at the script and being shown new insights but always waiting for the next bout of suffering. The final stanza describes the singer bending forward to peer between the ripples of the lake and seeing the leading character, perhaps symbolizing that they are finally seeing themselves clearly and facing their own personal struggles.
The lyrics of "Estranged" are open to interpretation, but one common thread throughout the song is the struggle to find meaning and understanding in a chaotic world. The use of water imagery and the idea of diving into a "lake of thousand faces" could represent the overwhelming amount of information and influences that we are bombarded with on a daily basis, making it difficult to discern truth from illusion. The idea of breaking through a "crystallized sphere" could symbolize breaking free from the constraints of one's own self-imposed limitations or mental barriers. Ultimately, the song expresses the desire to connect with something or someone that can offer comfort and stability in the face of uncertainty and pain.
