Bye Bye Bombay

Condurre sino a te e io no
Bye bye, bye bye, bye bye, bye bye, Bombay
Di condurre sino a te e io no
Bye bye, bye bye, bye bye, bye bye, Bombay
The lyrics of Afterhours’s “Bye Bye Bombay” describe a sense of detachment and a deep feeling of farewell to a city that is now perceived as “dirty” and emotionally draining. The singer is sitting on a balcony, looking at the port, aware of the black and lifeless heart of the city that is attempting to “spit out” a poem, a last effort to capture the attention and emotions of the singer before they leave for good. But the offering is late, and the singer is at peace with the decision to leave without looking back. The goodbye is not only directed at the city and its people but also at a person named Mimì, with whom the singer shares the thought that fear is a scar that seals even the toughest soul.
Through the use of a dark and melancholic tone, the song suggests that emotionally investing in a place or a person can be hard and often comes with the risk of getting scarred. The character portrayed is detached from the city and possibly from the events and people that brought them there. They are not afraid of falling, and they will not be caught because the disconnection remains. The song implies that these emotional wounds might heal, highlighting the importance of professional help and protecting oneself, suggesting that detachment can be a good thing, in some cases.

Scoperti tardi, tardissimo.
