The Man I Love
Aga Zaryan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the mellow moon begins to beam,
Ev'ry night I dream a little dream,
And of course Prince Charming is the theme,
The he for me.

Although I realize as well as you
It is seldom that a dream comes true,
To me it's clear
That the one and only for me will appear.

Some day he'll come along,
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong,
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do the best to make him stay.

He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
And in a little while,
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd,
I know we both won't say a word

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day

He'll build a little home
Just meant for two,
From which I'll never roam,
Who would - would you?
And so all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love.

Some day he'll come along,
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong,
The man I love
And when he comes my way

I'll do the best to make him stay.
He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
And in a little while,
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd,

I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day

Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little little home
Meant for two,
From which I'll never roam,
Who would - would you?
And so all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love.
I'm waiting for the man, yeah, for that man,
Mm! for that man, that man

I'm waiting for the man, for the man,
Mm! that man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Aga Zaryan's "The Man I Love" tell the heartfelt story of a woman desperately longing for her ideal mate, the so-called Prince Charming of her dreams. Though she acknowledges that such fantasies are rarely realized in real life, she holds on to a hope that somewhere, someday, the perfect man will come along. She envisions him as "big and strong," with the ability to make her understand him without speaking a word. In her mind's eye, they will have a home "just meant for two," and she will never feel the need to leave.

Despite the track's romanticized themes, the song is tinged with melancholy. The lyrics suggest that the singer is both hopeful and resigned to the idea that her beloved may never materialize. Perhaps she has already lost hope and is living in a world of unfulfilled dreams.

Interestingly, the music of "The Man I Love" bears little resemblance to the song's lyrics. The track, which originally appeared in 1924's Lady, Be Good!, was composed by George and Ira Gershwin as part of a Broadway show. Over time, the tune became a jazz standard, and it has been performed by everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Billie Holiday to Alicia Keys. Aga Zaryan's version, which appeared on her 2004 album Picking Up The Pieces, puts a distinctly modern spin on the classic song.
