Burning Bridges
Against Me! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw you burn down every bridge. Turn your back on everything, leave all illusions behind. Leave the chains of childhood in the past. Destroying the ideas the imprison the mind. Burning Bridges never to indulge in self-deceit again. Who's kidding who when you're lying to yourself? Having fun burning bridges never to look back on the past that made you what you are.

Keep your protest in your songs. Never voicing any real disgust, just charming antics of anger. The feeling's lost inside your vain big-headed dreams of grandeur. You're still stuck on trying to save the world. Politics without rhetoric, seeing clearly for just one moment, forgetting about the consequence. Burning Bridges never to indulge in self-deceit again. Who's kidding who when you're lying to yourself? Having fun burning bridges never to look back on the past that made you what you are.

Overall Meaning

In the song "Burning Bridges" by Against Me!, the singer observes someone who has moved on from their past and is no longer held captive by ideas and illusions that used to dictate their life. The individual has "burned down every bridge," therefore cutting all ties and leaving the chains of their childhood behind. The lyrics speak of the importance of not deceiving oneself and facing reality, rather than falling victim to the charm of anger and vain dreams of grandeur. The individual is urged to focus on the present moment and forget about the consequence, as they indulge in burning bridges never to look back on the past that made them who they are.

The song is a commentary on how it is essential to move on from the past and let go of things that are no longer serving us, even if it may feel painful in the moment. The lyrics emphasize the need to face reality and not deceive ourselves by clinging on to outdated beliefs and illusions that are no longer relevant in our lives. The song is a call to embrace change and leave behind things that hold us back from living fully in the present.

This is hands down one of the best demos ever. The quality may be poor but toms lyrics are so advanced and the melodies are so original. It’s never repetitive or boring. Constantly c hanging

Yeah, i really with they hadn't grown up so much. this shit hits home so well - the angst and the distress. it sucks to know that i'll have to only make due with this album because, though several others of theirs are good, they'll never make music like this again

Brynn Seana

I feel like the whole thing--from beginning to end--has been a progression and growth that Laura has experienced. It's all amazing, in my opinion. It's just really different than their new stuff.

what usernme?

there's 2 versions of this song and "national myth".both of them appear on Vivida Vis! and also have a "solo acoustic version" from late 97/ early 98 that sounds a bit different.

i can never find the other version but i had it 20 years ago. until the this moment, i thought i had just misremembered. really wish i would have done a better job of holding onto music back then. didn't even think about it. i also had a copy of their s/t EP and i lost it during a move. kills me inside lol.
