Scream It Until You're Coughing Up Blood
Against Me! Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You got to hold on to
Everything.
?
The gallows of your heart
?
And where are your friends?
Please help me through these years ahead.
Playing with each other's dearest vulnerability?
That this is all we know?
So this is how it's gonna stay?
I think I
Would rather remember
How it was and go our separate ways.
I don't feel anything
Unless we are living and dying for each other
Every second of our lives.

The lyrics to "Scream Until You're Coughing Up Blood" by Against Me! are open to interpretation and can be seen as an expression of frustration and disillusionment with social relationships. The lines "everything, you got to hold on to everything" could be interpreted as a plea to hold on to everything that is dear, including love, friendship, and life, but can also be seen as a warning to not hold on too tightly to material possessions. The line "the gallows of your heart" could be referencing the idea of being trapped in one's own negative emotions or feelings of guilt.
The question "and where are your friends?" can be seen as a cry for help, asking for support and guidance from those closest to you. The following lines "please help me through these years ahead / are we just drinking buddies playing with each other's dearest vulnerability" suggest a sense of emptiness and a lack of genuine connection in social interactions. The mention of "living and dying for each other" in the final lines could be interpreted as a hope for deeper and more meaningful relationships.
Overall, the song expresses a sense of disillusionment with superficial social interactions and a yearning for more genuine connection and passion in life.
