S.O.S
Agnetha F?ltskog Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are those happy days they seem to hard to find?
I try to reach for you. but you have closed my mind
Whatever happened to our love? I wish I understood
It used to be so nice. It used to be so good

So when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me S.O.S.?
The love you gave me. nothing else can save me, S.O.S.
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone though I try how can I carry on?

You seem so far away though you are standing near
You made me feel alive but something died I fear
I really tried to make it out. I wish I understood
What happened to our love? It used to be so good

So when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me S.O.S.?
The love you gave me. nothing else can save me, S.O.S.
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone though I try how can I carry on?

When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone though I try how can I carry on?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Agnetha Fältskog's song S.O.S. are a poignant reflection on the end of a relationship. The singer is struggling to understand what has gone wrong and why their once happy love has turned into heartbreak. The opening lines express a sense of nostalgia for the past, as the singer wonders where those "happy days" have gone. They feel like they are reaching out to their former partner, trying to mend the relationship, but it is as though their efforts are being rebuffed. The metaphor of a closed mind suggests that the other person is unwilling or unable to connect with them on an emotional level.

The chorus of the song, with its urgent plea for help, draws on the maritime emergency signal S.O.S. as a metaphor for the singer's distress. The love that they were once given was something that sustained them, but now that it is gone, they feel lost and helpless. The repetition of the question "When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?" highlights the depth of their despair, as they struggle to come to terms with the end of the relationship.

Overall, the lyrics to S.O.S. are an emotional tribute to the pain of lost love. The singer's sense of confusion and longing is palpable, and the song evokes a powerful sense of empathy for anyone who has experienced the same kind of heartache.

Where is the happiness that I once dreamed of?
You have changed you and are so far from me.
Where are the feelings you had?
How has it become so?
You are a stranger now, is no help at all?

Chorus:
Tell me, who can answer and who can explain? S.O.S.!
Where is my love that was so near? S.O.S.!
Who are you, as I now do not recognize?
Where is he, this man who was once my friend?

The great love, where did it go then?
How the melody which was so brittle and fine?
But we can go next to each other
So, you are far from me,
And my feelings they can not reach you.

Hook x 2

Why should you and I are like two strangers go?
Where is he, this man who I loved so?

A great song whether in Swedish or English. It's amazing and a little disturbing that B&B didn't regard this as a single until after the lack of success of So long, Rock Me and I do I do (apart from Australia). Everything about this song is timeless and brilliant, and deserved the success it gained and its definition of the true ABBA sound.
