Rock Star
Agnostic Front / Discipline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You choose the path you take
Yours was a big mistake
You put yourself at stake
ร‚ยดCause you just try too hard to be real.

Used to be so hard
wanna be rock star
Now I think itร‚ยดs time to get back to.
What was once ideal.

ร‚ยดCause you run your mouth
Always talk about
How you hang around
Who cares anyhow!
Always being down
When you come around
Who cares anyhow!

Whatever it takes to make
Whatever it takes to make you
Feel this way, go on and dig your grave

Because you want things your way.
We donร‚ยดt respect you anyway.

Overall Meaning

In Agnostic Front's song "Rock Star," the lyrics delve into the concept of authenticity versus posing. The lyrics suggest that the singer in the song has made a big mistake by trying too hard to be real. Despite trying to be a rock star, the singer realizes that it's time to get back to what was once ideal. The lyrics emphasize the idea of talking too much and trying too hard, suggesting that no one really cares about what the singer has to say or how they try to present themselves. Ultimately, the lyrics are critical of those who put too much effort into trying to be something they're not, particularly those who are insincere and lack authenticity.

My review on Allmusic.com written July 31, 2015. 4 Stars

Agnostic Front is the most influential NYC hardcore band of all-time. Victim In Pain, from 1984, is deservedly a hardcore classic and has taken on legendary status. Fast forward to 1999 and Agnostic Front was still very active, on a comeback of sorts. They had released the fine albums One Voice and Something's Gotta Give in 1992 and 1998 respectively. Riot, Riot, Upstart is a pure adrenaline rush as the songs pound the listener one after the other. Many anthems are churned out with Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma at their best. Rob Kabula on bass and Jimmy Colletti on drums complete this old school throwback with great skill. They have continued to release albums to this day and they are all of high quality from the band carrying the flag for NYC hardcore. There are other great NYC hardcore bands, like Madball for instance, but look to Agnostic Front for the leadership of this genre.
