He debuted as the main rapper of BTS in June 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment (now: BIGHIT MUSIC).

Prior to his debut, he was an underground hip-hop rapper under the name "Gloss" that self-wrote and produced his music. Suga adopted the alias Agust D in 2016, which is derived from the initials "DT", short for his birth place "Daegu Town", and "Suga" spelled backwards.

His first self-produced mixtape, Agust D was released on August 16, 2016 via SoundCloud. He intended to release his music for free in the form of a mixtape instead of a commercial studio album, describing it as the "feeling of being trapped in some sort of framework." On the record, he discussed matters such as his struggles with depression and social phobia. Fuse TV rated it as one of the top twenty mixtapes of 2016.

Suga re-released his mixtape for digital purchase and streaming in February 2018. The success of the reissue placed it at number three on Billboard's World Albums Chart, number five on the Heatseekers Albums Chart, and caused Suga's solo alias, Agust D, to reach number 46 on the Emerging Artists chart for the week of March 3.

In 2020, he released his second solo mixtape D-2 along with the lead single Daechwita on May 22. The mixtape consists of ten tracks, with songs sung and rapped in both Korean and English. Its lyrics share his viewpoint of the contemporary world. D-2 is according to him "a documentation of myself from 2016 onwards".

His debut solo album D-Day was released on April 21, 2022. Featuring the singles People Pt. 2 and Haegum, the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, tying him with teammate Jimin as the highest-charting South Korean solo artists in the history of the chart.

Suga is responsible for writing, composing and arranging, as well as mixing and mastering his material. He has over 150 registered songs accredited to his name with the Korea Music Copyright Association. Including Suran's WINE, which peaked at number two on the Gaon Music Chart and won Best R&B at the 2017 Melon Music Awards.
The foundation of his lyrics involve themes that are "full of dreams and hope", conceived with the intent of his music becoming "many people's strength". He cites Stony Skunk and Epik High as his inspirations to pursue hip hop music. Particularly, he credits the former's reggae-hip-hop hybrid album Ragga Muffin (2005) and its title track for igniting his interest in the genre, calling it "completely different" from mainstream music.

Suga started his mandatory military service on the 22nd of September 2023.

I just became an ARMY last September 2020 and I'm here listening to this song again.

The first time I heard this was from a reaction vid and all I could focus on was the lyrics. Before I realized it, I cried throughout the song.

I cried because I have the same mental health problems/disorders as Yoongi (mostly depression and social anxiety)

I'm happy that he got the help he needed and that he's an inspiration and a source of strength for all of us.

I never told anyone (not even my family or friends) about my mental health problems but I'm sharing it here to open up discussions about it. I haven't been to counselling or therapy but I hope in time, I will. I know I need to so I will gather up my courage to do so one day.

I never listen to this song because it pains me so much. I only listen to it when I’m extremely suicidal or when I’m at my lowest point, and that is rn. I relate to so many of the lyrics here, it’s insane. He lets me know I’m not alone. He makes me realize that I’m not weird for having social anxiety, depression, a psychiatrist, etc. I may struggle a lot and have suicidal ideations but the only reason why I’m still alive is because of Yoongi. If Yoongi fights through his struggles, then so can I. He’s my role model and I want to continue fighting just like him.

Yoongi 🥺 in 2015, when BTS had concert in Japan, he had a panic attack and hid himself in the bathroom and was unable to perform. At the same time Taehyung was brought to hospital for food poisoning. So the concert ended with only 5 members of BTS performing and Japanese fans were crying throughout the concert. After the concert, Japanese Armys bashed Suga for not doing the concert. After the tour, BTS went on a break but Suga went back to Japan and reminisce what just happened on that day. He posted a very, very long apology in twitter calling himself a weak man pretending to be strong and how he wished that he just went through the concert instead. In my opinion, although Japanese Armys deserves an explanation, Yoongi did not have to apologize for something he had been suffering for years (depression and anxiety since he was 18) and he should definitely not insult himself like that 😭 Hobi says Yoongi is the strongest at heart and real Armys knows that 💜❤

My introduction to BTS was their song Dynamite, and I can clearly remember Suga standing out to me. I never really knew why, but as I became more familiar with what BTS was and who Suga was, I began to notice how much presence he has no matter where he goes. Only people who have struggled carry themselves the way he does. I think that that’s why he stood out among everyone else. He’s really an incredible person.

The fact that most Armys (especially the casual bandwagon ones who mostly stans the maknae line) only knows Yoongi as a savage diss lord or cute little meow meow makes me very, very sad. i really respect yoongi a lot, coming to seoul when his parents aren’t supportive of him becoming a producer, being a trainee while visiting his friend in jail (dear my friend lyrics) doing part time job, got into an accident that crushed his shoulder and keeping it to himself because he’s afraid he’ll get kicked out. disrespected by the korean hiphop community because he used to be an underground rapper. telling us life advices and spreading awareness about mental health when it’s a sensitive issue in asia as it’s seen as a taboo and there’s a bad view to ppl who are depressed. this man really i respect him and i wanna thank him.

@@emimew it’s about his childhood friend who dreamed together with him, but they lost contact and one day he received a call from an unknown number it was his friend’s parents saying he’s in jail. yoongi traveled 3hrs just to see him, i’m not sure if this was the time he was a trainee or this is the time when yoongi is enduring his injury from an accident during his part time job. his friend did drugs, later on when his friend was released, he asked yoongi if he also wanted to try it hence the dear my friend song coming out. i hope this helped !

See, the thing that makes BTS’ Suga so special is that he isn’t this try-hard rapper with the super different and original rap style/flow, he is a boy with a voice that is ?? not feminine at all but not totally masculine either, he has a voice that’s extremely expressive and when it (voluntarily?) sort of “cracks”, it really sounds like he’s feeling what he’s saying. He has this voice that is soaked with passion and wrapped in tiny parts of his soul that he gives away and he has a voice where honesty is sprayed on every single sentence and I find that incredibly refreshing because most of the korean rappers out there are extremely predictable while Yoongi is literally just Yoongi, and all the versions of himself that he creates and shares through his music.

Coming back to this song after all these years and knowing how far Yoongi has come. He was able to pour all his frightening feelings into his music and share his struggles and now he seems much happier and at peace with himself. "Words I used to hide my weak self" I think he's repeated those lyrics in another song but I can't remember which; in Daechwita we see him 'killing off' the part of himself that is hateful and dark and toxic and pushes people away. He struggled with the pressure of fame (we see this in Interlude: Shadow too) but now he has accepted that is a part of his life. In older BTS videos we see them talk about how Yoongi is really kind but he rarely says something like 'I love you'; but in recent videos, we see him say 'I love you' easily. I think he has matured a lot and has learned to rely on others especially his members.

Yoongi is my bias because he is not afraid to share what he went through and he does so with incredible music and rap and talent. Now we see him growing his repertoire into dance, and singing, and collaborating with all these other talented artists. I am so proud of how far he has come. <3 ARMY will always support you Yoongi!

I've listened all AgustD's songs for almost a month without knowing the title and lyrics, this song is one of my fav among all and just thought he put the anger and pressure into it based on the music and how he rap.
Just now, I read some comments on another his song randomly, most of them said "Can't believe Yoongi shared his stories rawly on The Last" Not waiting any longer I searched the lyric, I came here and thought "oh this is my fav song!" innocently.. seconds later, I was hit hardly by the lyrics and sobbing hardly while reading it..

this song is a distant memory to armies. I remember when this was first released, after reading the title 'the last', after reading the lyrics... Tears poured from eyes and it wouldn't stop. I remember the whole drama of Japanese armies hating on Suga because he 'couldn't do the concert' and was 'selfish and weak'. He had a PANIC ATTACK. The lyrics are so truthful and have deep meaning... I can't stop crying. At the time of the release, I honestly thought yoongi was going to commit suicide. Yoongi's lyricism are very important for people that's inexperienced & on the verge of anxiety and fear for aspects of life whether it's about dreams or love, I feel like he "prepares" us about the necessaries of the complete experience. He doesn't sugar-coat thus he gives hope.

I always worry what others think about me, I occasionally have mental breakdowns from stress, I don't trust anyone fully but I've learned to live with it. I've always been independent and I've always fought a lot of problems by myself and I've had suicidal thoughts. But I learned to lean on some people for help (and they helped me with problems and reduced my stress). It might take awhile depending on what you've experienced since I've been betrayed and isolated many times, but I hope everything goes well for you ❤️

Yoongi made a song/rap, telling his story in such a emotional, painful but relatable way, that I still can’t get over this. He is really a strong person, especially since they get so much hate and have to deal with a lot pressure. And in such a time not to have support from people you love, like family, is even harder.
I hope he is doing well now, since he finally got his shoulder operated. I also hope that people will finally get what Yoongi went through and how strong he is.

When I first got into Bts in 2020 I liked all the members and either thought I would be OT7 or a Tae bias but then I saw on a tik tok comment that said Yoongi was suicidal. At the time I had depression, anxiety, and was very suicidal and because of that it affected everyone around. So it shocked me to see someone that looked so high up to you come to my level because I was in such a dark place. After I knew this I started to pay attention more and see how kind and strong Yoongi really is. It’s crazy that he went through all of that and still pushed through. When I really think about It I can’t help but to see Yoongi in a brotherly kind of way. Of course I see him as beautiful, handsome, and cute but I realized it’s more admiration. But like I said I was very suicidal so to see Yoongi a big star in my eyes have that kind of a past it helped me to want to change and better myself. Now me seeing this song coming out of that darkness I can truly see the pain that Yoongi and millions of others have to go through. I still have anxiety and I’m working on it but I will keep fighting because I know someone that is doing it too.

Background: Suga had no support from his family with his dream of becoming a rapper. He was incredibly poor from his choice of being an underground rapper and often had to choose between eating or taking the bus home. BTS has shown to be very transparent in their thoughts, vulnerabilities, and struggles throughout their journey as artists. I'm glad you brought this up, I have Depression, Social Anxiety, PTSD, and suspected ADHD I'm going to go to a professional about as soon as I can. I was able to get offically diagnosed for PTSD and had some family counseling for it (which we didn't even get to finish)... but I need a lot more... and I can't afford it yet so one of my main goals is to get to a point where I can afford Counseling and therapy.
I do my absolute best everyday to become more self aware, gracious, and disciplined so I can work through and cope- it's hard as crap, but the progress is very fullfilling.
I haven't been able to talk to too many people about it seeing as people around me either don't take it seriously enough or take it too far.
Yoongi is my bias wreaker for many reasons, probably the top one being the parts of himself he showed in this- and how he still shows that strength today.
I can relate, but I also admire him SO much. I never knew I could find the motivation to keep working and fighting daily just by thinking of someone I've never met irl.
He is- and will always be- more then "Savage/Cold bad boy Suga" and "Little Meow Meow".

Whenever I feel empty inside, I listen to this song. Not because it helps me feel better but because he gets it. He knows what it feels like to have a mindset where your old happy smiling self is dead and the new version, the depressed suicidal one was the one that killed them. No one else around me understands, but yoongi does. Because he went through it. And he felt it. Having someone create something that openly talks about these things is validating and comforting. It feels like I finally have someone to hold my hand when I've been stuck in a void all alone my whole life. When all I can feel inside is nothingness and numbness, this song is like a security blanket for me to hold on to. That's really special to have.

This is such a powerful song and his voice is full of raw emotions (from my opinion). I'm personally not really into rap but this really touched my heart and I'm crying now due to how this song touched me. Bts is truly an inspiration and it helps others who hear their music and now I can understand why Bts is worldwide famous.

Looking at how far he has come now, I feel so proud. This man here deserve the world. Fighting depression and anxiety is so hard that many people suffer very long slumps with that. But he overcame those things while working with such tight schedules. He is so strong.

I truly admire yoongi so much. He is so strong, most people would give up when they were in his situation, and I think it's very inspirational. He is inspiring me to not give up and continue on with my life, even though I am dealing with depression, anxiety and many more disorders. He is my idol for sure.

I'm incredibly grateful for this song. I discovered it at a difficult time. I understood my son's intense depression. Everything struck me here - the raw feelings inside the suffering person. I didn't understand them before. Then I was able to help my son with greater understanding. Since then, I love Suga and admire the personality that he is today.
