My Strongest Suit
Aida Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In life one has to face a huge assortment
Of nauseating fads and good advice
There's health and fitness, diet and deportment
And other pointless forms of sacrifice

Conversation, wit, I am a doubter
Manners, charm, they're no way to impress
So forget the inner me, observe the outer
I am what I wear and how I dress

Overwear, underwear, anytime, anywhere
Overwear, underwear, anytime, anywhere
Overwear, underwear, anytime, anywhere, ooh
Overwear, underwear, anytime, anywhere
Overwear, underwear, anytime, anywhere
Overwear, underwear, anytime, anywhere, ooh

Now I believe in looking like my time on earth is cooking
Whether polka-dotted stripes or even checks
With some glamour guaranteeing every fiber of my being
Is displayed to quite remarkable effects
From your cradle via trousseau to your death bed you're on view so
Never compromise accept no substitute
I would rather wear a barrel than conservative apparel
A dress has always been my strongest suit

Staying in or hitting townwards, from the top and working downwards
I ensure that every stitch is stitched in time
Whether wig or hat or turban, whether clad boudoir or urban
Not to strut your stuff outrageously's a crime
And the few who are invited to my wardrobe are delighted
As they wander through my things to find en route
That in negligee or formal I am anything but normal
A dress has always been my strongest suit

Now you don't need a recital of the reasons why it's vital
That tonight I simply have to look my best
That from coronet to sandal no one else is worth a candle
That I couldn't make more impact if I'm dressed
So bring me out my finest, most audacious, my divinest
Most revealing, most expensive and to boot

Most arresting, most heart-stopping, most free-flowing, most eye-popping
A dress has always been my strongest suit

Overall Meaning

In Aida’s song, “My Strongest Suit,” the singer explores the idea that clothing is a powerful tool for self-expression and self-representation. Throughout the lyrics, she acknowledges the many different societal pressures placed on individuals to look and behave a certain way, from health and fitness trends to etiquette and charm. Despite these pressures, the singer asserts that her outward appearance and wardrobe are her strongest forms of self-identity. She believes that the way she dresses is a reflection of who she is on the inside and that it is more important than anything else.

The lyrics convey a sense of confidence and rebellion against societal norms. Instead of conforming to expectations, the singer proudly displays her individuality through her fashion choices. She combines unexpected patterns and styles and doesn’t shy away from flamboyant or dramatic pieces. Her motto seems to be “go big or go home” as she expresses that she would rather wear a barrel than conservative apparel. The singer embraces the idea that fashion can be a form of art and that the clothes you wear can project a message to the world.

I saw this in person and this scene was one of my favorites. Lady acted the hell out of this role. "My strongest suit!"

@KM-ql4eb

Agreed. This is Sherie Rene Scott I believe her name was. Idina Menzel also was Amneris but her performance was nowhere near as good as this.

@flanplan5903

Fun fact: before this was a stage musical, it was originally almost a Disney animated movie, and then there was talk of a live action movie, with Christina Aguilera as Amneris and Beyoncé as Aida. I really REALLY would like that movie though.

@kapparhotau181

Beyonce? WTF! I'm so glad it fell through. I like Beyonce but Aida is not the role for her.

@AgentAO7

And this song in particular was actually given to The Spice Girls 😅

@Amiraclenospaces

I would have watched that movie if Beyoncé was in it😃

@samanthaDH

Beyonce is a beautiful singer but a horrible actress, so glad this didnt happen

@bootybebouncin

This song is literally my autobiography, play this at my funeral with a slideshow of me slaying lewks
