The Gods Love Nubia
Aida Lyrics

Take me in my dreams recurring
Cheerful as a childhood dance
Into one more taste of freedom
One more longing backward glance
In the sway of somber music
I shall never, never understand
Let me slip into the sweeter
The gods love Nubia
The beautiful, the golden
The radiant, the fertile
The gentle and the blessed
The pain of Nubia
Is only of the moment
The desolate, the suffering
The plundered, the oppressed
Nehebka
The gods love Nubia
Their glorious creation
Their songs roll sweetly
Across the harvest plain
All
The tears of Nubia
A passing aberration
They wash into the river
And are never cried again
The gods love Nubia
We have to keep believing
Though scattered and divided
We are still its heart
The fall of Nubia
Ephemeral and fleeting
The spirit always burning
Though the flesh is torn apart
Take me in my dreams recurring
Cheerful as a childhood dance
Into one more taste of freedom
One more longing backward glance
The gods love Nubia
The beautiful, the golden
The radiant, the fertile
The gentle and the blessed
The pain of Nubia
Is only of the moment
The desolate, the suffering
The plundered, the oppressed
The gods love Nubia
We have to keep believing
Though we're scattered and divided
We are still its heart
The fall of Nubia
Ephemeral and fleeting
The spirit, it's always burning
Though the flesh, it's torn apart
My spirit will keep on burning
Though the flesh, it's torn apart
Take me in my dreams recurring
One more longing backward glance
The song "The Gods Love Nubia" from the musical Aida, is a powerful ballad that celebrates the rich history and culture of Nubia, an ancient civilization that once existed in the Upper Nile region of present-day Sudan. The song describes the pain and suffering of Nubian people, who were plundered and oppressed by invading forces, but also celebrates their resilience and enduring spirit. The lyrics portray a longing for freedom and the sense of connection to the land and its history.
The opening stanza speaks of slipping away into a dream world and experiencing the music of Nubia, with its somber tones and sweeter chorus. It reflects a desire to understand the depth of sadness and longing that stems from the history of Nubia, and yet to experience hope and lightness of spirit despite the pain.
The chorus expresses the idea that the gods love Nubia, celebrating its beauty, radiance, fertility, and blessings. It also acknowledges and accepts the pain of the moment and the passing aberration of tears. The song acknowledges the fall of Nubia and its ephemeral and fleeting nature, yet expresses the belief that the spirit of Nubia endures, keeping the culture and the people together. The idea that the heart still beats even when torn apart is repeated throughout the song, expressing a deep sense of connection to the land and its people.
Overall, this song is a powerful tribute to the history and culture of Nubia, and a celebration of the resilience and enduring spirit of its people.

My mom actual saw this musical when these exact people, Adam pascal, and heather headley, played these songs. This is probably my most favorite song in the whole musical.

I saw the same version when I was in college. I wept then and now. I love this musical.

How lucky! I got to see Rent on its final six weeks and they brought back Adam Pascal for that. Funny enough I never got to see Aida but I own the soundtrack and know the story and want a revival so bad
