Written in the Stars
Aida Lyrics

Aida
I am here to tell you we can never meet again
Simple really, isn't it? A word or two and then
A lifetime of not knowing where or how or why or when
You think of me or speak of me and wonder what befell
That someone you once loved so long ago so well

Radames
Never wonder what I'll feel as living shuffles by
You don't have to ask me and I need not reply
Every moment of my life from now until I die
I will think or dream of you and fail to understand
How a perfect love can be confounded out of hand

Is it written in the stars?
Are we paying for some crime?
Is that all that we are good for
Just a stretch of mortal time?
Or some God's experiment
In which we have no say?
In which we're given paradise
But only for a day?

Aida
Marry the Princess, Radames. You can help my people. This could be our chance to do something important. Don't you see?

Nothing can be altered, there is nothing to decide
No escape, no change of heart, nor anyplace to hide

Radames
Oh, you are all I ever want, but this I am denied
Sometimes in my darkest thoughts, I wish I'd never learned

Radames & Aida
What it is to be in love and have that love returned

Aida
Is it written in the stars?
Are we paying for some crime?
Is that all that we are good for
Just some stretch of mortal time?

Aida & Radames
Or some God's experiment
In which we have no say?

In which we're given paradise
But only for a day?

Overall Meaning

The song "Written in the Stars" from the musical Aida is a haunting duet between the two main characters, Aida and Radames. The song reflects the impossibility of their love and the painful prospect of being torn apart forever. Aida begins the song expressing the inevitability of their separation and the haunting memory that will linger on. Radames, on the other hand, conveys his powerful love and how he will always think of her, yet will never understand how their perfect love could have failed.

The bridge between their verses poses a series of questions, wondering if their fate is predetermined or if they are simply pawns in some divine experiment. The lyric "just a stretch of mortal time" conveys the fleeting nature of their love and how it cannot last beyond their immediate circumstances. The chorus asks if they are paying for some crime or if they are being given a taste of paradise only to have it abruptly taken away.

The song serves as a poignant reminder of the cruel nature of fate and how love can be both fleeting and powerful. It expresses both pain and longing while questioning the larger forces at play.

Why is Aida so underrated when a masterpiece love story and music like this exists!

@Sasbatabata

I never seen Aida before but I can easily recognize Heather Headley's voice anywhere! Aida is one musical I want to see one day no matter who plays the title role.

@Mrnickstr89

There’s a bootleg of the OG cast here on YouTube. Not gonna link to it cause I don’t want it to get taken down. It’s worth watching. You think Headley is awesome as a singer ..... ooooo boy just wait till you see her performance.

@manuelorozco7760

In June of 2013 I got the fortunate chance of being a part of this musical with a wonderful cast of crew at my community theatre. The leads who were 18 and 19 at the time was so wonderful and the girl playing Aida has a beautiful voice. She totally rock Aida's songs.
