Two Of Us
Aimee Mann / Michael Penn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone´s hard earned pay
You and me Sunday driving
Not arriving on our way back home
We´re on our way back home
We´re on our way home
We´re going home
Two of us sending postcards
Writing letters on my wall
You and me burning matches
Lifting latches on our way back home
We´re on our way home
We´re on our way home
We´re going home

You and I have memories
Longer than the road
That stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo in the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere on our way back home
We´re on our way back home
We´re on our way home
We´re going home

You and I have memories
Longer than the road
That stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo in the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere on our way back home
We´re on our way back home
We´re on our way home

We´re going home
We´re going home

Overall Meaning

The song "Two of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn is a beautiful song about two people riding through life together. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of two people who are content with just being with each other, even when they are going nowhere. They are happy to be together and they are on their way home. The first verse refers to the two of them riding nowhere and spending someone else's hard-earned pay. This suggests that they are not worried about their destination or their financial situation. They are just enjoying the journey of life together.

The second verse talks about the two of them sending postcards and writing letters on the wall. This shows that they enjoy staying in touch even when they are apart. The line "You and me burning matches, lifting latches on our way back home" suggests that they might be doing some exploring or discovering something new but still not losing sight of their destination - home. In the third verse, the lyrics refer to the memories they have together. These memories are longer than the road ahead of them. This means that even if the journey ahead might be long or uncertain, they have each other and their memories to hold onto.

The final verse repeats the previous verse's lines but adds a few new details. They are wearing raincoats and standing solo in the sun, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the struggles and challenges they might face in life. However, they are still chasing paper and getting nowhere, which suggests that they are okay with not achieving anything as long as they are together. The song ends with them going home, showing that even though they might have gone through different paths, they always come back to each other and to what matters most - home.

Dos de nosotros cabalgando a ninguna parte
gastar el dinero de alguien
Pago duramente ganado
Tu y yo el domingo manejando
no llegar
En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa
Dos de nosotros enviando postales
Escribiendo cartas
En mi pared
tu y yo quemando fósforos
Pestillos de elevación
En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa
tu y yo tenemos recuerdos
Más largo que el camino que se extiende por delante
Dos de nosotros usando impermeables
De pie solo
En el sol
tu y yo persiguiendo papel
llegar a ninguna parte
En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa
tu y yo tenemos recuerdos
Más largo que el camino que se extiende por delante
Dos de nosotros usando impermeables
De pie solo
En el sol

En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa

My partner has been in hospital for the last month after suffering from a traumatic brain injury. He's coming home tomorrow. I went for a drink in a local pub of mine and after about five minutes, the musicians started this, which is a song I love anyway. But that last "We're going home" sent the onion chopping ninjas right my way. Cried my eyes out, but happy tears ❤️

I had the I Am Sam CD when it first came out, and listened so many times, I wore it out. Yet I never bothered to look at who was singing this duet. 🤭😧The soundtrack was a ginormous hit, the film, not so much.

What extraordinarily gifted brothers!

@mpmajer

This is the best Beatle Cover I have heard.

Got to see Michael Penn long ago in Charlotte, NC with about 25 or so people. Ten feet away. Hung out with him for a little while between sets. It was him and Patrick Warren. They sounded fantastic. Best artist I've seen live that intimately that wasn't work in the studio (I'm a guitarist). All the interesting parts to his arrangement and the sound effects, etc were all there on the keyboard and his singing and acoustic and electric playing was great of course. Everyone there was just amazed how small the crowd was and knew we were all getting a special treat but I felt bad in that he should have a much larger audience.

I was at the Atlanta airport in 2002 about to join the Army, listening to this on the headphones in the music store, thinking about my baby brother, and crying

@MrTitaniumFox
