Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, my shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string (Ooooh)
Ah, who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Ooooh Ooooh Ooooh Ooooh Ooooh
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, my shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooooh Oooooooh Oooooooh
The lyrics to Aimer's version of "Viva La Vida" is a powerful tale of the rise and fall of an individual in power. The beginning of the song speaks of the past where the king ruled the world, with the seas rising and falling upon his command. But now in the present, he is alone, with no one to share his power with. The second verse speaks of how he held the key to his destiny one minute but in the next his world came crashing down around him. As he discovers that his castles were built on pillars of sand, his power and authority crumble, and the people cannot believe what he has become. The chorus of the song, which is repeated several times, speaks of the king's loneliness, and how he hears the ringing of Jerusalem bells and Roman cavalry choirs singing. He yearns for a companion and protector, someone he can trust and look up to, hence the line “Be my mirror, my sword, my shield”.
The last verse provides a somber tone to the song. With the revolutionaries waiting for the king's head on a silver platter, he realizes that he is nothing but a puppet on a string. He longs for a life free of the burden of power, where he could be ordinary like everybody else, without the constant fear of being overthrown. The final chorus speaks of his regret for his past actions, where he knows deep down that Saint Peter won't call his name, and that there was never an honest word spoken when he was in power.

1. Why is Aimer covering Coldplay? (would genuinely like to hear the story)
2. Why have I never heard Aimer's cover of this song?
