Easy
Airhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't remember where I heard it, but I heard it all the same and I believed the world could end
There was a tall man in a big car and he called me by my name, said he'd like to be my friend
He opened up the door and I climed in among the flowers he had planted on the floor
"I'll be the engine yeah and you can be the wheels" and now there's side-walking maggots at my door

I might be dead but if I am then I don't mind 'cos this is easy
There's nobody running after me
I'm off my head and if I am what's it to you, yeah this is easy
I am nothing I don't want to be

There was a man who moved up north and for the first six months he wore a balaclava and a pair of shades
Though he was thought a little strange, he was such a nice chap, his manners were the envy of the friends he made
Then one day he took his shades off and people stood and stared, "My God! His eyes are green, I thought they would be blue!"
And when the balaclava followed suit, the girls all said "Oh you're so ugly, and we got off with you!"

I might be dead but if I am then I don't mind 'cos this is easy
There's nobody running after me

I'm off my head and if I am what's it to you, yeah this is easy
I am nothing I don't want to be

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Airhead's song Easy present a surrealistic narrative that reads like a surrealist poem. The song talks about the journey of the singer, who appears to have a high degree of self-destructiveness and is seeking oblivion. The opening line, "I don't remember where I heard it, but I heard it all the same and I believed the world could end" sets the tone for what follows; the singer is fully aware of the destruction around him, and rather than running from it, he chooses to embrace it. The image of a "tall man in a big car" who picks him up and offers to "be the engine" while he becomes "the wheels" could be interpreted in various ways. On the surface level, it seems like a manifestation of the singer's self-destructive tendencies, whereas on another level, it could signify a form of escapism where he chooses to surrender control to a higher power.

The second verse tells the story of a man who moves up north and hides his face behind a balaclava and a pair of shades. He appears to be accepted despite his eccentricities, and people admire his manners. But when he takes off his shades and balaclava, people judge him solely based on his looks, and the girls who once fell for his manners reject him, emphasizing the superficial nature of society.

The chorus repeats the phrase, "I might be dead, but if I am then I don't mind 'cause this is easy," establishing an air of acceptance and surrender to the inevitable. The lines, "There's nobody running after me, I'm off my head and if I am what's it to you" suggests the singer's defiance to the oppressive societal norms that require people to conform to a certain standard.

Been looking at this album at my local charity shop, think I'll pick it up tomorrow. I was curious about the awful album cover and wondering what they sounded like. They seem to be a mix of early Blur and The Lightning Seeds.
