Theory: the aliens killed their smaller member because they figured they couldn’t afford to slowly corrode it over time, and could not risk getting caught. They weighed theirs chances before deciding they needed to do it as soon as possible. It’s the saddest kill in the whole movie for me 😞

I always thought it was because they saw on the cctv cameras that Dr Gediman was looking at how Elgyn's team was taking down the Auriga's security force officers in the basketball court to escape from them. So they realized that they had to kill one of their own as well to escape from their cell using the acid blood to melt the floor.

I think the weird voice thing with Call was because she has partially merged with the ship's computer, the second voice was the computer being "mind-controlled" by her.

That's the way I interpret it, her voice commands were being broadcasted by the PA system to let the crew know the computer was being given instructions not authorized by the crew, probably a security feature.

I actually like this movie! Despite its flaws, I remember most of the characters, scenes, and actions. There were quite a lot of cool ideas here in my opinion.

I agree with "a lot of cool ideas," but unfortunately, there were a lot of dumb aspects too. Overall, I think it's OK, but I'd probably rate it as the second worst Alien film (Covenant being bottom of the barrel). I actually love the director that made it, but if you look at his other movies, it seem unbelievable that anyone thought he'd be a good choice for directing an Alien movie. If you've seen his other movies, it makes total sense why Resurrection turned out the way it did. Look up the trailers for the movies Delicatessen and City of Lost Children by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and prepare to say... WTF?!

Fun note! In the novel Alien: The Cold Forge, a chemo-hormonal fear response helps trigger the ovomorphs ( eggs ) wake up and release the face huggers.

@McKae Yes and no. The Ovomorphs are separate creatures from the face huggers yes. However they only exist to house the face huggers to begin with. The only instances in which it failed to open were for synthetics.

I'm pretty sure when she was drinking with gloves on, Call was simulating being drunk. At that point, nobody knew she wasn't human. She needed to go to try and kill Ripley, so she pretended to be drunk, stumbling out of the door on her way out of the room, then dropping the facade once she was out of sight. Seems like she was doing it so she could slip away inconspicuously. Nobody would suspect a drunk girl having ulterior motives. Then again, she could have just said, "I'm going to bed."

I'm not a big fan of how they tried to make it funny..The series essentially went serious, serious, depressing af, mildly serious with humor. Still, I simp for aliens.

The scene with the failed Ripley clones in the lab, the swimming xenomorphs, the humanoid xenomorph....
the movie was great in ending the original series, it was actually a nightmare fuel movie with most of it’s content.

OMG, you watched the extended cut... the original cut doesn't end on earth.
It ends with them orbiting earth.
The first time I saw this movie, the human-alien hybride was terrifying for me... now it's just sad and scary.
It also was directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet, french director who later made Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, and before that he made The City of the Lost Children.

@Alteori They're down far enough in the atmosphere that the ship's internal atmosphere balances with what's outside and the hole in the window doesn't cause them all to suffocate. Ripley and Call still have the same exchange of lines, just in the cargo bay looking out the window instead of looking out over the ruins of what's either Paris or Las Vegas. Sidenote: I think that Call's double voice was because she was 'speaking' via the ship's comms system, not just her own throat. She was doubling up with Father's circuits.
The Newborn to me is equal parts terrifying, disgusting, and sympathetic. The way it just flat out lobotomizes the xenomorph queen (it's her forebrain he chops through, not her jaw) always makes me shudder. Then the way it pleads for Ripley's help IN ENGLISH as it's dying just jerks at my heart.
As for the acid that hits Christy I think it was a mix with the slime the xenomorphs secrete and thus wasn't as potent or long lasting. I also think that that particular one was able to do the spitting while the caged ones couldn't is that the spitter might've been a different caste (xenomorph variants/castes are covered in the comics and games).
Sidenote the Second: The screenwriter for this one was Joss Whedon.

This one may not be as great as the others, but you just gotta love how they stay true to the main protagonist. Ripley, clone or not, is still a Ripley badass we love. The xenomorph models with their gross wet gooiness is damn amazing in this movie too. They don't show them as some simple military tools, but as living and breathing weapons and it's just awesome. They have been a creature I've loved ever since I was a kid.

The reason Ripley 8 had the xenomorph in her is possibly because of Xeno reproduction . A common theory is that the face hugger doesn't implant an egg, but rather starts a process of changing the hosts DNA to produce the chest buster. This explains why Xeno's take on some characteristics of its host ( making it more suited for the environment ) This movie potentially backs up that theory, because when they retrieved Riply's blood, it would be post FHer after her DNA was altered, and it took 8 tries to get a clone that was human enough to live and gestate a chest buster, and not some horrible amalgam between the 2 species due to her DNA being spliced.

Fun fact: the director of Resurrection was also a director on French indie film Amélie that basically started the Manic Pixie Girl movie fad of the 2000s (Garden State, Elizabethtown, 500 Days of Summer, Stranger Than Fiction, etc.)

They've got some other really good lesser known movies too, like Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children and Big Bug.

I recommend getting the novelization, it gives you some scenes from the xenomorph's point of view. It gives a lot of insight into how they think.

When it comes to original 4 Alien movies I always love "Aliens" and "Alien Resurrection" because it feels like a small invasion of these crazy monsters and the humans look like they're at war with something that is so grotesque and wild.

I've always really enjoyed this movie. Maybe because I'd already seen Jean Paul Jeunet's other films beforehand so I had an idea of what to expect, but it has a fantastic cast (esp Ron Perlman and Brad Dourif) and Sigourney Weaver had full creative control over her character and clearly has a lot of fun. This seems like the type of movie that was fun for the cast and crew in general.

Actually I quite liked this one, Ron Perlman always brings an awesome, gravelly-voiced edge to anything he’s in and I liked Ripley-8 too! The Newborn was ... different. Not my favourite but a decent idea in theory (there’s a T-Rex Xenomorph folks, is this so unthinkable?) but they just messed it up. Glad you like it too Alteori, though it’s just a regular pleasure for me (I think AVP 2 was waaay worse) 😎😎😎

@VotingChipmunk oh I loved the Predalien, the idea was equal parts scary and cool ... but I think they made it OP not only in that it was a Predalien Queen (how since the dead Predator got caught by a regular Facehugger?) so it could make more little spawns of Satan ... but also multiple offspring are born instantaneously from the poor host ... seriously that bit in the delivery room with all the women in labour and seeing that one woman and her unborn child die twists my guts to think about (then again later when there was a Xenomorph in nursery with the babies) 😖😖😖

It's funny, because I absolutely love Requiem, faults and all. If it had a bigger budget, I think it would've done much better with the effects. It was also, quite honestly, the first movie I saw in either Alien, Predator, or AVP, and this was after I played the AVP game from 2010, so my mother bought the Unrated AVP:R, which was more gore than I was used to in movies. I always preferred video games, so watching gory movies was not something I was used to XD My favorite kill from Requiem definitely has to be the girl cut in half with the Yautja glaive.

I, too, have questioned the corrosive properties of Xenomorph blood. The only thing I can think of is that it reacts differently (or rather, corrodes differently) based on the substances it comes into contact with. =^~^=

It’s also a chemical reaction to oxygen,
The xenomorphs are silicone/Silicate based life.

So while our blood is rich in iron giving its color, their blood is in a sealed pressurized environment so it’s properties can dramatically change and their bodies are more tolerable to hostile chemicals for its biology since silicone based life could exist in theory but it’d have to be in absolutely brutal conditions.

As for the inconsistencies it’s resurrection… we’re not really shocked.

I understand why some people dont want it to be part of the Alien canon but i also kinda liked it especially the body horror aspect of it and the design for the Alien human hybrid which to me actually was refreshing from the usual Xenomorphs, not that they arent awesome themselves but their "scare" factor was long gone by that point. That Hybrid tho, skin crawling creepy. It's hitting that uncanny vibe where it's almost cute(?) yet terrifying with those dark eyes.

It all kind of reminded me of that deleted scene from Alien with the Cocoon transformation of victims, slowly being turned into Ovomorphs alive, begging to be killed. Thats that extra touch of disgusting (in a good way) horror.

Fun fact: at 28:08 when you ask what the hell is that, it was made by Chris Cunningham, which after a year or two directed some of the best music videos from the 90's, including for Madonna ('Frozen'), Aphex Twin ('Come To Daddy') and Bjork ('All Is Full Of Love'). I grew up with the alien franchise and the films had a massive effect on me... I remember going to collect alien resurrection at the video store and walking home so excited and honestly was really happy with the film when I watched it .
It fit in with the times and that's something people always forget when putting films under the microscope.
The time in which a film is released reflects on the pop culture at the time.

I LOVE the xenomorph design. As much as films 1 and 2 are works of genius (and the rest very much NOT) it is Gieger's Xeno design that I am in love with and I am ALWAYS gonna want to see it more and more.

Alien Resurrection is just a fun movie to watch imo. It's still a fave of mine to watch. Newborn deserved more screen time, honestly. A really cool design and haven't really seen anything since. Wished the design could've been seen again in something.

I have always assumed (and is my head canon) That the reason for Ripley 8 and the Alien Queen sharing characteristics was due to the cloning process and the samples obtained. I assumed that the sample consisted of Both of their DNA and the cloning was creating a strange mutant (hence the other clones) so over time they had to figure out how to isolate Ripley and the chest burster.

I remember being incredibly excited about this movie as it was the first one I could see in theatre’s. I enjoyed the movie and the book, it wasn’t perfect but it was fun. And them trying to do something different with the franchise was awesome

I.. I also liked this movie, but the last time I watched it was over 10 years ago. I especially liked the weird human xenomorph hybrid that thought clone Ripley was his mother and remember feeling bad when he was crying in pain while being sucked out of the hole into space. I also liked the twist with the Winona Ryder girl who was a bot the whole time but didn't even know it.
Edit: this was the first Alien flick I watched too, so it's easier to enjoy sequals that are considered "bad" and universally hated when you haven't seen what came before in the franchise.

Excellent review! This film has always been a toss-up for me- I like it about as much as the first film, Alien (the best is, of course, Aliens). Interesting characters and situations, really good detail on the aliens (including their crazy swimming abilities, mimicked amazingly by Ripley-8!), and an interesting character arc for Ripley-8. I really like this film.

Idk how I feel about xeno Ripley, personally in her place I'd view myself most likely as a threat/abomination, I feel like clone me would stay alive just long enough to kill of the xenomorph, also it's ok the xenomorph they sacrificed was on board, they have a hive mind and willing to do whatever it takes, it's a parasitic species, I don't feel bad for it, and I'm an INFP

He, H.R. Geiger really hit on something when he designed the Xenomorph, it is in my humble opinion one of the greatest creature designs of Hollywood. That being said I think the Queens from the films need a little work, what I've seen of the comic book Queens I liked more but certainly the soldier or drone Xenomorph is one of the best creature designs, you totally can see this as a "real" creature. It's nimble and sleek like a cheetah, claws and teeth like a lion or bear, intelligent like a primate, a full on predatory force to be reckoned with and oh by the way it has acid for blood so even if you kill it it can still destroy you. Certainly an apex predatory badass.
One of my all time favorites and I've been a fan of Xenomorphs since I was a wee lad many moons ago.

It was my understanding that it took many attempts to clone Ripley with the alien embryo inside rather than a horrific alalgam of the two, hence all of the rejected half-Ripley half-alien hybrids. Pretty sure Ripley 8 has xenomorph in her DNA because they couldn't separate all of it from her, but were able to just enough to get two separate organisms 99% how they were.

That opening scene wasn't in the original release, as far as I remember. It's been a while since I watched it but I'm pretty sure I would remember such silly opening. Also, it really looks added on later because the cgi is AWFUL.

Not saying the overall cgi in the movie is good but compare to it looks weird XD

nice bit of trivia: alledgedly, the backwards basketballshot that went through the hoop is actually real and unassisted- weaver just threw that thing behind herself and hit. the reason for the sudden cut after it is that somebody amongst the mercenaries broke character in amazement immediately afterwards

I actually liked resurrection too. honestly I never watched any of the alien movies until this year after I bought the 6 film collection from Walmart. Of course I liked the first one and adored the sequel but alien 3..... Like after finding out Hicks and Newt died in the crash I could not stop glaring at my TV throughout the whole movie. Anyway after that I sorta took a break from the film collection, so when I finally got around to watching resurrection I appreciated how much more upbeat this movie is compared to alien 3.

I definitely prefer this one too Alien 3. These are also my favorite iteration of the xenomorph, they look great and you get to see them doing more. I remember watching this as a kid and it absolutly terrifying me.

It's a short nod to the fans that Ripley gives the inner jaw of a Xenomorph to C.A.L.

I watched aliens resurrection and I never got the bug in my intro, so either I had a different version of the movie or when downloading the movie it didn't completely download.
Edit: yeah I looked back at the movie, and I think there are two versions of the film because A: in my intro it showed a close up of all the failed Ripley's and B: the ending did not show the messed up earth.

I know this isn't the best alien movie, but I do enjoy it. Especially the underwater scene and how the aliens are portrayed in general
And was an interesting experience of a movie.

Resurrection is a pretty rough watch but it does introduce some interesting concepts. Not to say they're all executed well per se but it does put them meaningfully in play.

Three minutes in and I begin to realise that I saw a severely cut version of the film since there are scenes that I do not remember being there. >.<
Also the director of this movie said once "Wait I thought we're filming a comedy, no?" ...and really, it explains so much about this movie.

I'm pretty sure Sigourney Weaver's head wiggling was supposed to be the idea that she had an alternative way of seeing with the temples of her skull. That's why when she examines something she puts it near her forehead or the sides of her head. Like sonar

Hi hon, to my mind, there's only one fox that really counts and I'm listening to her! 🙂 I've commented before(why I love the first 6 star wars movies and why you should watch them to a certain point, I.e. not the new ones)! I thought your commentary on this was great! Yes it's got some flaws but like you I really enjoy it, badass Ripley especially(love that character)! The acid spit I thought was a weapon with diluted acid to use for specifically that which was why they had to kill their pack mate, because the spit wouldn't be strong enough to get them out of the cell. I've always liked the alien movement to, very sinuous and primal. Almost a mix of a snake and a big cat! Wonderful! Anyhoo, thanks for this. I appreciate how much thought and effort you put into these videos and I think you're sense of humour is fantastic! Will be eagerly anticipating what you decide to do next! 😁😁👍👍❤

Personally I always liked the idea of the aliens mutating past their usual symbiotic lifecycle cause of the imperfect cloning into somewhat mammalians, brought most horrifically to life with the Newborn creature.

Alteori, awhile back you mentioned how it bugged you that scorpios rex didn't try to kill the kids when it had the chance, well I think I have a answer, maybe it enjoys tormenting humans before it kills them, explaining why it got upset with Yaz when she yelled at it, she didn't give it the satisfaction of fear, but that's just my theory, it's probably as simple as plot armor, but I like my idea more

On the xenomorphs killing one of their own to escape, I read that it was becoming a bit too tame and compliant.

@LadyFaeryJ It's more of a fandom consensus thing. Can't find a direct citation for it, but the wiki and the TVTropes Headscratchers page for the film have it that they needed a lot of acid right then and there to make a big hole, and they picked the compromised drone for it.

Mmmm. I got r*ped by some 20 yr old when I was 4 and I definitely bled. I later learned that even women who lose their virginity later bleed. I think it was a way in ancient times to tell if a marriage was consummated. I didn't know that they didn't always bleed.

She got some of the Xenomorph dna from the flawed cloning process; the Xenomorphs are also smarter in this one for the same reason. And the weird robot voice part was her voice playing back through the ships com systems.

Have not seen that ending before... In the version I've seen it was all green and lush on Earth. Or at least they fly over forests and such... I clearly remember them discussing Earth as a dump in the movie, and then when they get there it's the opposite. Or is my memory totally fizzling out? Was this version of the movie, the extended directors cut? There's some scenes that Alteori showed that I had never seen before. Like when Ripley wakes up during the operation or the intro with the bug, never seen them. And I watch all the alien and predator movies on repeat when I'm falling asleep every night😬 it's literally routine at this point, no joke. They're more there for the background noise but I always liked them a lot growing up. Thanks for showing them Alteori, I gotta update my collection.
