Yamaoka attended Tokyo Art College, where he studied product design and interior. He joined Konami on September 21, 1993, after previously being a freelance music composer.
He is best known for his work on the Silent Hill series for which he composed all the music and sound effects in all seven current games (excluding Silent Hill Play Novel for Game Boy Advance). Some of the music from the first four games was also remixed and used in the Silent Hill movie. He also played a doubly important role as producer of the third and fourth Silent Hill games (which were available for PlayStation 2/PC and PlayStation 2/Xbox/PC). His music from Silent Hill 2 was performed live in 2005 at the third Symphonic Game Music Concert in Leipzig, Germany and at the world-premiere of PLAY! A Video Game Symphony Live! on May 27, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois, where Yamaoka himself accompanied the orchestra with an electric guitar. As well, Yamaoka actively composes music for Konami's Bemani line of games, particularly, the Beatmania IIDX series.
His first original, non-soundtrack album, iFUTURELIST, was released in January 2006.

Yamaoka's sound commonly contains strong melancholy undertones and generally identifies with the dark ambient, industrial, trip-hop and rock genres. Since Silent Hill 3, he also started working in collaboration with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Joe Romersa for vocal compositions.
Much of his work from previous titles has been compiled for the 2006 Silent Hill movie adaptation, directed by Christophe Gans.
His music from Silent Hill 2 was performed live in 2005 at the third Symphonic Game Music Concert in Leipzig, Germany. Yamaoka also performed music from Silent Hill at the world-premiere of PLAY! A Video Game Symphony Live! on May 27, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois, and accompanied the orchestra with an electric seven-string guitar. He also composed songs for Konami's Bemani series, which has also featured tracks from Silent Hill.

Personal Life
Before working as a video game composer, Yamaoka initially sought a career as a designer, but instead became a musician after studying product design at Tokyo Art College.

Some of the soundtrack sure sounds similar, it's Akira Yamaoka after all. The game, however, feels like a bad netflix show. Boring walking simulator with cheesy dialogue and etc, we're all familiar with that. The game has more in common with Life is Strange than with Silent Hill to be honest.

@Adami i cant agree with u Team bloober did such an amazing Job doing an sh homage the Story follows 1:1 the sh formula just switch niwa resort with silenthill change the Protagonist ghost powers with a psychological dissorder and so on or what about the many little references like the dead certificate in the begining wich is clearly a reference to Alessa and yes youre right its more a walking Simulator but that was shattered memories too

@trailerpark guy Shattered Memories wasn't a japanese SH made by team Silent though. And no, the game (Medium) has nothing in common with the "silent hill formula". The story doesn't bear any silimarities at all and the gameplay and structure of the experience also doesn't. In Silent Hill you go to multiple different locations that are often full of incredibly designed, creepy enemies and also disturbing puzzles that'll lead you to either a small story segment or a bossfight. There is also very little dialogue, and the main character doesn't speak to himself like an idiot narrating every single obvious thing we've just seen on the screen 10 seconds ago. And even when you examine an item there is no voice acting, that's a sharp contrast to this game where the protagonist can't shut up for more than 3 minutes because the game is trying to be a Netflix show. The dialogue being horribly written also doesn't help the game.
There are zero enemy encounters (unless you want to count those stupid generic lovecraft inspired!!!! tentacles that patheticaly die in one hit when parried by a special magic shield that the character has.
There are a bunch of chase sequences and stealth sequences but they're laughable. The main monster is also generic and relies too much on the demonic factor instead of the subtlety most SH designs feature. And he also won't shut up, i swear this game exhaustingly uses every single horror hollywood/tv show trope.
Sorry but this game is a bland, uninspired, generic walking simulator with zero redeeming qualities besides the soundtrack and that is only due to Akira, given that the other scores this polish composer worked on are just as testeless as the games he's composed for.

Honestly this game reminds me of those cheap PS3 movie-like games like Heavy Rain and Beyond (the facial animations are ironically just as uncanny), only this time less interactive. As i've said, it shares more in common with Life is Strange than it does with Silent Hill.

At the end of the game you turn on the radio and the song begins. That moment you know the story ends and you feel a strange sadness. Really good game.👍

I´ve finished the Game 10 Minutes ago. Got Goosebumbs, when I heard her Voice. That was so lovely hearing (and immediately recognize) her again after all these years :3
