Brown was a star football quarterback at Mount Vernon High School in New York, but rejected an athletic scholarship to the University of Iowa to pursue a music career. In 1987, Quincy Jones selected Brown as the first winner of the Sony Innovators Talent Search. Subsequently, Brown went on to work with Jones on several projects, most notably the platinum single "Secret Garden" from Jones' double platinum album Back on the Block. On this recording, Brown was one of a quartet with Barry White, El DeBarge, and James Ingram.
His debut album from 1988, In Effect Mode, sold more than two million copies, topping the Billboard R&B chart for seven straight weeks. The album included his memorable single "Nite and Day", which topped the R&B singles chart and reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. He received numerous Grammy and American Music Award (AMA) nominations, and won an AMA for Best New R&B Artist. He also received several Soul Train Award nominations, and won the award for Best New Artist. He also won several New York Music Awards. In addition, Al's 900 phone line was third in generating revenue, following those for New Kids on the Block and Run-DMC.
As a writer and producer, Brown introduced the multi-platinum group Jodeci and teen R&B performer Tevin Campbell (also one of Quincy Jones's former protΓ©gΓ©s), as well as Faith Evans, Dave Hollister, Case, and Usher to the music scene.
On June 23, 2009, Al released his fourth studio album, Honey I'm Home. It features the hit song, "I Love It (Papi Aye Aye Aye)." The single peaked at #77 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and at #22 Adult R&B.

Don't hit me too hard
Oh, yeah
Give it to me, give it to me
Give it to me, to me, to me, woo
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
Girl, girl, girl
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
Don't you leave me standin' here
What is it, you feel no fear
Let me make it up to you, my dear
I'm all alone
Sittin' right here by the phone
My heart is broken now, believe me, girl, ooh
Wait, wait, you'll see
You'll get used to me
I know you'll love me, girl (If you give me a chance)
I'm all alone
Sittin' right here by the phone
My heart is broken now, believe me, girl, ooh
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
I wanna know what's on your mind
You're back here runnin' the same old line
You love me and you care (whatever)
I'm all alone
Sittin' right by the phone
My heart is broken now, believe me, girl
Please come home
Whatever
Is there something wrong with you
Or is there something wrong with me
Tell me something
Do I not look good enough for you
Or maybe, baby, you just look too good for me
Don't sweat yourself
On the strength
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
You make me so mad
That you want to be on your own
I waited for so long, I waited by the phone
All of a sudden you want me back
Ha-ha
What's up with that, you got me on hold
What do you think you dope on a rope
Nope
What am I supposed to sweat you
You're supposed to just run all over me
Zero on the strength
Yo', Scott, it ain't hard to tell, right, huh
All the brothers grab a girl and get out your seat
And rock to the rhythm of this funky beat
My name is Al B. Sure!
Rock to the rhythm, the rhythm, the rhythm of the funky beat
All alone, my girl
Oh, hey, no, no, no, no, no, no
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
All alone you get off on your own, girl
All alone you get off on your own
All alone you get off on your own, girl
Girl, girl, girl
In "Off On Your Own," Al B. Sure! expresses his frustration and confusion with a girl who enjoys being alone rather than being with him. He questions why she feels no fear and why she keeps running the same old line that she loves and cares for him. Despite feeling heartbroken and waiting by the phone for her, he sarcastically asks if he's not good-looking enough for her or if she's just too good-looking for him. In the end, he tells all the brothers to grab a girl and rock to the funky beat, hinting that he's moved on from his heartbreak.
The lyrics of the song reflect on the fear of rejection and the struggle to understand why someone may not be interested in a romantic relationship. Al B. Sure! tries to understand the reasons behind the girl's desire to be alone, and whether he is at fault or not. He questions both himself and the girl, anticipating a resolution for his feelings of heartbreak and frustration.
