His mother named him Albano because, when he was born, his father was fighting in Albania for the Italian Army during World War II.
He made his debute in 1966 both as a singer, at the Festival delle Rose, and on television. He won the Disco per l'Estate, an Italian song contest, with "Pensando a te" in 1968. He recorded some major hits such as "La siepe" and "Nel sole" at that time.
He married Romina Power (daughter of the American actor Tyrone Power), the woman who had already started to share her musical career with him, on July 26, 1970.
Al Bano returned to his solo career in 1996 with È la mia vita which was followed by Verso il sole in 1997 and Ancora in volo in 1999.

N'aria serena doppo na tempesta
Pe' ll'aria fresca pare gia' na festa
Che bella cosa na jurnata 'e sole
Ma n'atu sole
Cchiu' bello, oi ne'
'O sole mio
'O sole, 'o sole mio
Sta 'nfronte a te
Sta 'nfronte a te
Lùcene 'e llastre d'a fenesta toia
'Na lavannara canta e se ne vanta
E pe' tramente torce, spanne e canta
Lùcene 'e llastre d'a fenesta toia
Ma n'atu sole
Cchiu' bello, oi ne'
'O sole mio
Sta 'nfronte a te
'O sole, 'o sole mio
Sta 'nfronte a te
Sta 'nfronte a te
Quanno fa notte e 'o sole
Se ne scenne
Me vene quase 'na malincunia
Sotto 'a fenesta toia restarria
Quanno fa notte e 'o sole
Se ne scenne
Ma n'atu sole
Cchiu' bello, oi ne'
'O sole mio
Sta 'nfronte a te
'O sole, 'o sole mio
Sta 'nfronte a te
Sta 'nfronte a te
What a wonderful thing a sunny day
The cool air after a thunderstorm
The fresh breezes banish the heavy air
What a wonderful thing a sunny day
But another sun
That's brighter still
It's my own sun
That's in your face
The sun, my own sun
It's in your face
It's in your face
Shining is the glass from your window
A washwoman is singing and bragging
Wringing and hanging laundry and singing
Shining is the glass from your window
But another sun
That's brighter still
It's my own sun
That's in your face
The sun, my own sun
It's in your face
It's in your face
When night comes and the sun
Has gone down
I start feeling blue
I'd stay below your window
When night comes and the sun
Has gone down
But another sun
That's brighter still
It's my own sun
That's in your face
The sun, my own sun
It's in your face
It's in your face
The song, "O Sole Mio," celebrates the beauty of a sunny day after a storm. The lyrics paint a picture of the joy that sunshine brings, with the cool air and fresh breezes serving as a sign of the good things to come. The singer praises the sun, which is not just any sun, but his own personal sun. This sun shines brighter than any other and is a symbol of hope and happiness.
The second part of the song shifts the focus to a woman and her window. The glass is shining, and a washwoman is singing and speaking proudly of her work. This section continues to celebrate the beauty and positivity of life, with the woman's singing and laundry work serving as a metaphor for the joys of everyday life. The singer once again praises his sun, stating that it shines down on the woman and her window.
The final section of the song takes a somewhat melancholy turn as the singer acknowledges the sadness that comes with the setting of the sun. He longs to stay below the woman's window, basking in the afterglow of the day. The song ends with a final declaration of the beauty of his personal sun, which shines in the face of those he cares for.
