Guilty
Al Bowlly‎ Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though you've decided that our love is wrong
And think that we should part
It seems as though I have loved you so long
You'll always be in my heart

Is it a sin
Is it a crime
Loving you dear like I do
If it's a crime then I'm guilty
Guilty of loving you

Maybe I'm wrong dreaming of you
Dreaming the lonely night through
If it's a crime then I'm guilty
Guilty of dreaming of you

What can I do
What can I say
After I've taken the blame?
You say we're through
You'll go your way
But I'll always feel just the same

Maybe I'm right
Maybe I'm wrong
Loving you dear like I do

If it's a crime then I'm guilty
Guilty of loving you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Guilty" by Al Bowlly and the Ray Noble Orchestra convey a sense of emotional conflict and heartache. The singer is in love with someone who has decided that their love is "wrong" and must come to an end. However, the singer cannot help but feel that they have loved the other person for so long that they will always be in their heart.

The second verse discusses the idea of whether loving someone could be considered a sin or a crime. The singer seems to acknowledge that others might disapprove of their love, but insists that they are simply guilty of loving the other person. The third verse speaks to the pain and confusion of heartbreak, as the singer wonders what they can do or say to change the situation. The final lines of the song reflect the singer's continued devotion to the person they love, despite everything that has happened.

Through these lyrics and the heartfelt delivery of Al Bowlly, "Guilty" captures the essence of a great love that is met with obstacles and heartache. It speaks to the power that love can hold, even in the face of opposition and adversity.

I just learned this recently. 😢 I ❤ Al Bowley. May that angel beckon to him as the pearly gates swing out. 😇

@@TheJackster-tl8oi Yes, his biography said instead of going to a bomb shelter he chose to go home. He died in his bed. The thing is, he could have spent the war in America - as did Ray Noble and many others.
