The Very Thought Of You
Al Bowlly & the Ray Noble Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The very thought of you and I forget to do
The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a king
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till Iâ??m near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till Iâ??m near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above

It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Al Bowlly & the Ray Noble Orchestra's song "Very Thought Of You" express the idea of being consumed by the mere thought of a loved one. The song reveals how the singer's thoughts and emotions are dominated by the memory and expectation of being with the person they love. The first verse shows how this intense feeling makes the singer forget about everyday concerns and responsibilities. The second verse elaborates on the idea that time seems to slow down when the person is not there, and the singer finds glimpses of their loved one in the world around them, through flowers and stars. In essence, the very thought of the person fills the singer's heart and mind with joy and contentment, making everything else fade away.

Al Bowlly is responsible for getting me into 1920s and '30s music. His voice is so lovely and expressive.

@madelyngrace3456

ugh why does it feel like I’m the only one that’s still into this kind of music 😭 💔

@FuShengAlex

I'm 47 and grew up on chiefly soul music like Sam Cooke, Marvin, the Delfonics through my dad. Also Chuck Berry, Frankie Avalon and doo wop from the 50s moreso on my own and I felt very well versed on music history.

I have only recently learned about the swing and "Big Band" era of music from the 30s/40s that preceded the 50s/60s I had no idea growing up about the various musicians and songs from this era.

I have fallen head over heels over Jo Staffords music especially. Thank goodness for YouTube or else this would've been locked away from me forever. Have a blessed day!

@phredl

This arrangement is perfect in every way.

@coyoteblue4027

Cole's arrangement was 10× better.

@Joseph-pt9yn

@@coyoteblue4027 Nat King Cole obviously sings it very well, but to me, the less dramatic arrangement here feels more sincere, and there's a dreamlike softness to the original which really accords lyrics of the song.
I know part of that dreaminess is just from the age of the recording, but hey, if it works, it works.

@coyoteblue4027

@@Joseph-pt9yn Ah, I see what you're saying, and can appreciate your perspective. But for me personally, nothing captures dreamy like some Nat king Cole String harmonies. Granted, they certainly aren't soft and quiet throughout, but then, neither are dreams, right?
