Wish You Were Here
Al Green Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looking out my window, sun shinning bright
Birds singing, trying to make things right
How did your love songs play from those doors?

I don't want no one to come in to catch me sigh
But every since you left, said goodbye
I wish you were here with me
I wish you were here with me

? bout your kiss, gloom all around me
Seem like love is never gonna find me
I keep on looking for a, brighter day
When all I see is time slipping away

I've got to stop and get myself together
All I can see is stormy weather
I wish you were here with me
I wish you were here with me

I've got to stop, get myself together
Cause all I can see is stormy weather
I wish you were here with me
I wish you were here with me

I wish you were here
I just wish you were here with me

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song sets the scene for the singer's melancholic state. The sun is shining outside, and birds are singing, but the singer is still feeling down. He's thinking about his lost love, and how the love songs he hears now just remind him of what he's lost. He's sighing when he thinks about her, and he doesn't want anyone else to see him like that.

In the second verse, the singer laments about the gloom that is around him since his love left. He feels like he'll never find love again, and that time is just slipping away from him. He's looking for a brighter day, but all he sees are stormy clouds. He realizes that he needs to get himself together but can't seem to battle the stormy weather.

The repetition of the chorus, "I wish you were here with me" emphasizes the singer's longing for his lost love. He's drowning in his sorrow and wishes he could have her by his side to lift him out of it. The song is a classic example of how love has the power to make us feel both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.
