His biggest hit was "Unchained Melody" in 1955. Other hits were "He", "11th Hour Melody", "Never Turn Back", and "After the Lights Go Low" (all in 1956). "After the Lights Go Low", sung with a put-on British accent, was his last charted hit.
In the late 1950s and 1960s, Hibbler became a civil rights activist, marching with protestors and getting arrested in 1959 in New Jersey and in 1963 in Alabama. The notoriety of this activism discouraged major record labels from carrying his work, but Frank Sinatra supported him and signed him to a contract with his label, [lable]Reprise Records.
However, Hibbler made very few recordings after that, occasionally doing live appearances through the 1990s. He died in April 2001 in Chicago.
The Very Thought Of You
Al Hibbler Lyrics

The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a king
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
In Al Hibbler's "The Very Thought of You," the lyrics express the powerful effect that a person has on the singer's life. The very thought of this individual causes the singer to forget the mundane aspects of daily life. Instead, the singer exists in a dreamlike state of happiness that feels like royalty. The idea of this person creates an intense longing in the singer, which makes time seem to stand still until they are reunited. Finally, the singer sees this person everywhere, in the stars and flowers, and concludes that the very thought of them is enough to sustain their love.

Al Hibler in 1959 opened me up; let me sing from my heart. I love his voice, his range, his ability to let me feel the very thought of "YOU".
