Avalon
Al Jolson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I found my love in Avalon
Beside the bay.
I left my love in Avalon
And I sailed away.
I dream of her in Avalon
From dusk till dawn.
So I think I'll travel on
To Avalon.

Every morn' my memories stray
Across the sea where flying fishes play.
And as the night is falling
I find that I'm recalling
That blissful all-enthralling day.

Beside the bay.
And I sailed away.
I dream of her in Avalon
From dusk till dawn.

So I think I'll travel on
To Avalon.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Al Jolson's song "Avalon" speak to the memory of a lost love. The singer tells of how he found his love by the bay in Avalon, but then left her behind when he sailed away. Despite the distance and time, the singer still dreams of his love in Avalon from dusk until dawn. The memories of his time in Avalon linger with him, as he longs to return to the place where he found his love.

The lyrics paint a picture of a wistful longing for a simpler time, and a lost love. The imagery of flying fishes and falling night further emphasize the distance between the singer and his love, as well as the fleeting nature of their time together. The repetition of "Avalon" throughout the song serves as a reminder of the idyllic place where the singer found his love, and his desire to return there.

One of the greatest entertainers the world has ever seen or will ever see again. Jolson put the roar into the roaring 20s for sure, charismatic, powerful and melancholy too, he could hold an audience in a trance, bring joy and laughter to any crowd and he knew how to charm them with his personality and smile. Jolson made things happen.Truly a genius.
