Sonny Boy
Al Jolson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Climb up on my knee, sonny boy
Though you're only three, sonny boy
You've no way of knowing
There's no way of showing
What you mean to me, sonny boy

When there are grey skies
I don't mind the grey skies
You make them blue, sonny boy
Friends may forsake me
Let 'em all foresake me
I still have you, sonny boy

You're sent from a heaven
And I know your worth
You made a heaven
For me, here on earth

When I'm old and grey, dear
Promise you won't stray, dear
For I love you so, sonny boy

When there are grey skies
I don't, I don't mind grey skies
You make 'em blue, sonny boy
Friends, friends may forsake me
Let 'em all, let 'em all forsake me
I still have you, sonny boy

You're sent from a heaven
And I know your worth
You've made a heaven
For me, here on earth

And the angels grew lonely

Took you because they were lonely
I'm lonely too, sonny boy

Overall Meaning

"Sonny Boy" is a beautiful and touching song that expresses a father's deep love for his son. The lyrics capture the poignant moments of a father's affection for his young child with words that resonate with people of all ages. The first stanza encapsulates the tender moments when a father is comforting his child in his lap, telling him how much he means to him. The joy that the son brings to the father's life is apparent in the second stanza when the father is expressing his love for his child, saying that even when friends abandon him, he still has his son.

The third and final stanza of this song is particularly poignant as it is the only time when the father reveals his fears and vulnerabilities. The father acknowledges that he is getting old and hopes that his son would always be there for him. The song concludes by expressing the pain and loneliness felt by the father when his son is taken away by the angels who were lonely. The lyrics are exceptionally touching because they communicate a relationship that has both a father's protective love and a son's enduring love.

Man, the way he says "Sonny Boy" at 2:25 never fails to hit me where I live.  I wonder if he ever didn't cry while recording any of the versions.
