Is it love
Alabaster Box Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where have the people gone?
Or is it the end has come?
Who has the right to say
That I want to live this long
I can not perceive
So do I believe that it's true

So is it love?
Or is it an angel
Coz I want to sleep at night
And know that it is you

Where have the people gone?
What have I become?
Turning my eyes away
From all I know is wrong
I've got to see the truth
And all I need is the proof

So is it love?
Or is it an angel?
Coz I want to sleep at night
And know that it is you

So is it love?
Or is it an angel?
Coz I want to sleep at night
And know that it is you

So is it love?
Or is it an angel?
Coz I want to sleep at night
And know that it is you

So is it love?
Or is it an angel?

Or is it God who holds
The future in his hands?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Alabaster Box's song "Is It Love" speak to the uncertainty and confusion of life, and the search for meaning and love. The opening lines of the first verse pose a question about the disappearance of people - this could symbolize a sense of isolation or loneliness that the singer is experiencing. The following line suggests a sense of impending doom or uncertainty about the future, which could be interpreted as either personal or societal. The singer is questioning who has the right to determine how long they want to live, suggesting a loss of control.

The second verse sees the singer turning away from things they know are wrong, suggesting a moral conflict or crisis of conscience. They express a desire to see the truth and find proof, indicating a thirst for knowledge and understanding. Throughout the song, the recurring question of whether it is love or an angel that will bring them peace and comfort is a metaphorical search for answers to life's big questions. The final verse introduces the idea of God holding the future in his hands, offering a glimmer of hope and a suggestion that perhaps love and peace come from a higher power.

One interesting interpretation of the lyrics is that they reflect a spiritual journey or awakening. The references to angels and God suggest a search for a higher meaning or purpose. The line "I've got to see the truth" echoes efforts to seek enlightenment or truth in various religious or spiritual traditions. Additionally, the sense of uncertainty and confusion could reflect a sense of personal or collective crisis that drives people to seek meaning and answers outside of themselves.

God led me to hear this song seven years ago when my son was sick. He was 2 years old back then & he had very high fever that wasn't coming down with medication. When this song started playing I felt the presence of angels in my son's room and I heard a voice saying to me : the battle is over. Immediately the fever started coming down and my son was healed. I kept the song playing over and over again, the whole night, and i kept feeling the presence of Angels in the room. This song reminds me of that miracle, of the divine presence that I have experienced.. it's so anointed...
