Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).
Chanson parfaite
Alain Souchon Lyrics

Un truc profond
Pour tous les gens de la planète,
Mettons...
La musique, ce serait le battement
Du coeur des hommes,
A l'unisson un instant,
Les paroles, elles sont faciles:
Regarde en l'air
Le mur de l'Hôtel de Ville,
Trois mots dans la pierre.
Ce serait une chanson parfaite,
Un truc profond
Pour tous les gens de la planète,
Mettons...
The lyrics of Alain Souchon's song Chanson parfaite reflect the artist's desire to create the perfect song that would resonate with people all over the world. The opening lines emphasize the importance of a deep and meaningful song that would touch the hearts of listeners regardless of their backgrounds. Souchon envisions the perfect melody as "the beat of men's hearts," an expression of unity that brings people together in a beautiful way.
The focus on simplicity in the lyrics is also notable. Souchon suggests that the perfect lyrics need not be complicated, but rather could be found in something as commonplace as the three written words on the wall of the Hôtel de Ville. In other words, the perfect song does not need to be filled with poetic language and complex metaphors, but can simply convey a powerful message that everyone can understand.
Overall, Chanson parfaite is a song about the power of music to transcend borders and bring people together. It speaks to a very human desire for connection and understanding, and its simplicity and sincerity are part of what make it such a beautiful piece of music.
