Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).

Nous avons rencontré
Un grand chemin de fer
Qui nous a emmenés
Tout autour de la terre
Dans un wagon doré
Tout autour de la terre
Nous avons rencontré
Avec tous ses coquillages
Ses îles parfumées
Et puis ses beaux naufrages
Et ses saumons fumés
Au-dessus de la mer
Nous avons rencontré
La lune et les étoiles
Sur un bateau à voiles
Partant pour le Japon
Et les Trois Mousquetaires
Des cinq doigts de la main
Tournant la manivelle
D'un petit sous-marin
Plongeant au fond des mers
Pour chercher des oursins
Revenant sur la terre
Nous avons rencontré
Sur la voie de chemin de fer
Une maison qui fuyait
Fuyait tout autour de la terre
Fuyait tout autour de la mer
Fuyait devant l'hiver
The song "En sortant de l'école" by Alain Souchon is a whimsical journey through the eyes of a child's imagination. The song begins with the children leaving school and coming across a grand train that takes them on a trip around the world. In a golden wagon, they travel across the earth and meet the sea, which is walking with all its shells and fragrant islands, including beautiful shipwrecks and smoked salmon.
As they move forward on their adventure, they encounter the moon and stars on a sailboat heading to Japan, the Three Musketeers, and a small submarine directed by five fingers of the hand looking for sea urchins. The children meet a house running away from winter but jump on their train and chase after it. When they finally catch up, the children and their train run over winter, and spring emerges to thank the children, bringing new flowers to the world. In the end, the children come back to where they started the journey on foot, going all around the world and the sun, moon, and stars through various modes of transportation.
The song's lyrics are a beautiful representation of the imaginative world of children and how they can transform ordinary things into incredible adventures. The song teaches the listener about the beauty of the imagination and how it can make the world a more exciting and meaningful place.
