Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).

Voilà l'histoire
Une jupe rouge, des bottes en daim
Dans un manoir
Un manoir noir
Avec des tours
Des tours dont je fais le tour
Par amour
Automobile
The song "L'ile du dédain" by Alain Souchon is a melancholic portrayal of unrequited love. The lyrics speak of a woman who lives on an island - the island of disdain - and the singer's obsession with her. He describes her physical appearance, including her red skirt and suede boots, as well as the black manor with towers where she lives. The singer confesses that he has put his heart in an automobile-like boat and sails around the island out of love for her.
The song's chorus indicates that the woman is unaware of his love for her. Despite the singer's efforts to catch her attention, he remains unnoticed. He writes "Je t'aime" (I love you) on signboards and screams international hits. He dances in ridiculous feathers, but she doesn't care. The chorus repeats after each verse, indicating the singer's persistent obsession with this woman who remains out of reach for him.
The song's melancholic tone suggests that the singer is tormented by this unrequited love. He describes the repetition of his repetitive activities, sailing around the island, writing, and screaming. He notes that life isn't always fun with love, and he's sharing his sentiments with the listener. The song's climax occurs in the repeated chorus, where the singer's frustration at the woman's ignorance is highlighted.
