Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).
L'Amour 1830

Elle voulait qu'on se promène
Je devais lui faire la cour
Mais pas l'amour
Mais pas l'amour
Elle commençait un poème
Et s'enfuyait en pleurant
Dans le vent, oui, dans le vent
Moi, l'amour 1830
Pathétique, romantique
Je trouvais ça démodé
Moi, l'amour 1830
Je n'ai pas su le comprendre
Et je reste malheureux, malheureux
Dans le parc, au point du jour
Un cabriolet s'en va
Il emporte mon amour
C'est mon amour qui s'en va
J'ai gardé ce mouchoir bleu
Le souvenir d'un poème
Et je marche malheureux
Que je l'aime
Que je l'aime
Moi, l'amour 1830
Pathétique, romantique
Je trouvais ça démodé
Moi, l'amour 1830
Je n'ai pas su le comprendre
Et je reste malheureux, malheureux
J'ai voulu vivre au présent
Un amour du temps passé
Quand on contrarie le vent
Le vent peut tout déchirer
Moi l'amour 1830
Pathétique, romantique
Pathétique, romantique
Pathétique, romantique
Je trouvais ça démodé
The lyrics of Alain Souchon's L'Amour 1830 tell the story of a man who tries to court a woman in a park at dawn. She wants to go for a walk, and he tries to win her over with his charm. However, he makes it clear that he only wants to court her, not take things further. She begins to recite a poem and runs away crying. From afar, she shouts, "I love you," but he doesn't understand the significance of her words. He considers himself to be a man of his time, not someone stuck in an earlier era. His approach to love is based on what's popular and trendy, rather than what his heart desires. As a result, he becomes unhappy and loses the woman he loves.
The underlying theme of the song is the idea that love transcends time and trends. Perhaps the man's failure to understand this notion is what causes him to lose the woman he loves. While he tries to live in the present and adapt to changing social norms, the woman is moved by an older, more romantic version of love - the kind that existed in the 1830s. Her ideas may seem outdated to him, but they are timeless and universal, which is why he can't forget her despite their short time together.
