Undercover Angel
Alan O'Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Cryin' on my pillow
Lonely in my bed
Then I heard a voice beside me
And she softly said
"Thunder is your night light
"Magic is your dream"
She said, "See what I mean?"
I said "Whaaaat?"
She said "Ooo-ooo-ooo-wee"
I said "All right!"
She said "Love me, love me, love me"
Undercover angel
Midnight fantasy
I never had a dream that made sweet love to me
Undercover angel
The answer to my prayer
You made me know that there's a love for me out there
(Somewhere)
Yeah, somewhere
Heavenly surrender
Sweet afterglow
Undercover)
Givin' up my heart to you
Now, angel, don't go
She said, "Go find the right one
"Love her and then
"When you look into her eyes
"You'll see me again"
I said "Whaaaat?"
She said "Ooo-ooo-ooo-wee"
I said "All right!"
She said "Love me, love me, love me"
Undercover angel
Midnight fantasy
I never had a dream that made sweet love to me
Undercover angel
The answer to my prayer
You made me know that there's a love for me out there
(Somewhere)
Oh, somewhere
Now you know my story
And girl, if it's right
I'm gonna take you in my arms
And love you tonight
Underneath the covers
The answer lies
Lookin' for my angel
In your sweet lovin' eyes
She said, "Whaaat?"
I said, "Ooo-oo-oo-wee"
She said, "All right!"
I said, "Love me, love me, love me"
She said, "Whaaat?"
I said, "Ooo-oo-oo-wee"
She said, "All right!"
I said, "Love me, love me, love me"
Undercover angel
Midnight fantasy
I never had a dream that made sweet love to me
Undercover angel
The answer to my prayer
Love me, love me, love me
Undercover angel
Midnight fantasy
I never had a dream that made sweet love to me
Undercover angel
The answer to my prayer
You made me know that there's a love for me out there
The song "Undercover Angel" by Alan O'Day tells the story of a man who is crying and feeling lonely when suddenly he hears a voice comforting him. The voice claims that magic is his dream, and just as he was holding her, she said "See what I mean?" This is the moment where the chorus begins to harmonize, revealing that the voice belongs to his undercover angel, who appears to be a symbol of hope and love.
The angel tells the man to find the right one and to love her as they both know best. As the song progresses, there is a sense of surrender and love blooming between the two, leading to an afterglow that will forever be remembered by the singer. The lyrics to "Undercover Angel" can be interpreted as a love story that speaks to the desire that people have to find a compatible partner who is nurturing and loving.
The song is an excellent example of how the songwriters of the 70s infused love and hope into their lyrics, capturing the zeitgeist of the era. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and desire, which were common themes in many songs from that time.

So here’s my little stories that I remember about Alan O’day.
My mother worked for Warner Bros. Music from 1974-1981. She knew Alan very well and what I remember of him as a kid was pretty cool thinking back at it.
I remember the day Alan’s song first came on the radio we were on the 90 freeway in Los Angeles heading to my grandmothers house and my mom went nuts when his song came on the radio and said, Alan on the radio shush let’s here it! I was 8 years old.
My second memory of him was being on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. My mother and I watched it on TV and I still remember it to this day. ( I can’t find any footage of his appearance from American bandstand on YouTube or the Internet) if anyone happens to know where I can find a video of this please let me know I would appreciate it.
Back in the day (the 80’s) Alan used to come over to our house to see my mom and visit. I remember when he would show up because he used to come by wearing his Muppet Babies jacket. Alan did all the music for the Muppet babies TV show back in the 80s for Jim Henson. Alan was a nice guy but also a little reserved.
The last time I saw Alan was in 1989 where my mother convinced him to go to a karaoke bar in Torrance California to sing with her one night. (This is when karaoke was the hottest thing on the planet). So my Mother, Alan, my best friend at the time and I went to this bar. I remember Alan initially didn’t want to get on stage and sing but my mother coaxed him into doing it. The place I remember was packed. He did get up on stage and the song he sang first was Angie baby (He wrote for Helen Reddy). At first people didn’t recognize him but when he started to sing Undercover Angel that’s when things started to kick in. But the song I remember him the most that night was he sang the song Jeremiah was a Bullfrog. Yeah that song! Lol
That’s the only memories I remember of Alan I just wanted to share that little tidbit with everybody since I see so many posts. Nothing big just little memories of him.
