Out of the Blue
Alan Parson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out of the blue
I come sailing
Through the years
Through the years

What do I do?
Now that I've seen
All our hopes
And all of our fears

And I'm riding a lonely highway
I'm the man from out of the blue
Yes, I'm riding a lonely highway
I'm the man from out of the blue

I travel far
Yet no distance
I'm still here
Always here

So follow the call
To our senses
Still there's hope
Behind the fear

And I'm riding a lonely highway
'Cause I'm the man from out of the blue

And I'm riding a lonely highway
I'm the man from out of the blue
Yes, I'm riding a lonely highway

I'm the man from out of the blue
Out of the blue

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Out of the Blue" by Alan Parsons is about being lost and unsure of what to do, yet hopeful and determined to find a way forward. The first verse talks about sailing through the years, which could represent the passage of time and the different stages of life. The line "Now that I've seen all our hopes and all of our fears" acknowledges that the journey has been filled with both positive and negative experiences. The second verse talks about traveling far yet feeling like no distance has been covered, which again emphasizes the idea of being lost and unsure.

Despite the uncertainty, there is a call to follow our senses and find hope behind the fear. The chorus talks about riding a lonely highway, which could symbolize the journey towards finding direction and purpose. The recurring line "I'm the man from out of the blue" could represent the idea of sudden change or a new perspective that can provide clarity and direction.

Overall, the song is about the struggle to find meaning and direction in life, but also the hope and determination that we carry within us to keep moving forward.

I don't know what the matter is with this particular song... Since the first time I've heard it, I can listen to it on and on without being fed up with it.Not only I find the melody just magic but the voice of Tony Hadley seems to come directly from the skies. It has a calming effect on me, so much so that when I'm angry, sad or preoccupied with something, I put it on and instantaneously reach a different level of consciousness, like in a sort of trance. Magic !

This reminds me of Mr. Hadley's "Maybe You and I". There's a dream like quality, with a solidity that makes it memorable. Very good collaboration. Well done.
