Fake Plastic Trees
Alanis Morissette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Her green plastic watering can
For her fake Chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic Earth
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
To get rid of itself

It wears her out
It wears her out
It wears her out
It wears her out

She lives with a broken man
A cracked polystyrene man
Who just crumbles and burns
He used to do surgery
For girls in the eighties
But gravity always wins

And it wears him out
And it wears him out
And it wears him out

She looks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
My fake plastic love
But I can't help the feeling
I could blow through the ceiling
If I just turn and run

And it wears me out
And it wears me out
And it wears me out
And it wears me out

If I could be who you wanted
If I could be who you wanted all the time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Fake Plastic Trees" by Alanis Morissette are filled with metaphors and imagery that showcase the theme of fakeness and artificiality. The song speaks of a couple who live in a world that is unreal and fake, with fake objects and fake plants. The first verse talks about a woman who has a fake plastic Earth and a fake Chinese rubber plant that she waters with a fake green plastic watering can. These symbols signify the fake and artificial world that the woman lives in. She bought these things from a rubber man in a town that is also artificial, with plans to get rid of itself. The verse reflects a sense of loneliness, sadness, and emptiness that one may feel in an unreal and artificial world.

The second verse is about a man who is broken and cannot hold himself together. He is compared to a cracked polystyrene man who crumbles and burns. He used to be a surgeon for girls in the 80s, but now gravity has taken over him. The verse reflects the pain, decay, and uncertainty of life. In the chorus, the phrase "It wears him/her/me out" reflects how the unreality and artificiality of the world are exhausting and draining.

The final verse is about the desire to be real and authentic. The lines "She looks like the real thing, She tastes like the real thing, My fake plastic love" suggests that the singer is aware of the fakeness of his love, but he cannot help the feeling. He wants to break free from this unreal world and be who he wants to be, but is unable to do so.

Not everyone can cover this song and make it work. Alanis obviously can. Bet her live shows rock. She sounds like the real thing.

@pseudowunderkind

she makes the covers her own, sometimes or most of all the songs she covered is even better than the original

@mormand5003

I saw her do this in Austin during the jagged little pill era when I was 12. I thought it was great and my sister told me it was a radiohead song. I went and sought out the Radiohead version at Flipside Records in San Antonio. Because of Alanis I was turned on to Radiohead

@paul150365

a very good cover typically Alanis would love to see her live, but i wonder if there is a studio version of this song by her think she'd really kick ass with it.

@dominicomegon4714
