Waaaay back in my '95 high school days, my 'Advanced English' class was tasked with an oral interpretation assignment from an 'American poet'. I consciously performed 'Perfect' in front of 50 silent faces of my peers and sweated through this soul baring experience (I prefer introversion and any public performance where the focus was on me made me sweat; puberty!!!!!) I was feeling this song deeply at the time and wanted to express my feelings. I received a 'C-' on my assignment because as my teacher told me in a frustrated, scolding tone of voice after she held me back after class to "discuss what I had done", "Alanis Morissette is Canadian, not American. I performed a "pop song" and "not a poem"." Yes, the former is fact, the later was trite opinion. To this day, I love having expressed my soul through performing Alanis's artistry, even as a sweaty, scared teenager. That experience was worth a 'C-' and will always be an 'A+' for me. She touched my life with her raw vulnerability and ability to connect to the deeper, taboo realities of human experience. Namaste, Alanis!

I’m 30 now and the only good memories I have of my heroin addicted mother is driving around in her ‘86 cougar while she smokes half a pack of Marlboro reds with the windows up jamming out to this whole album.

this brings sad memories of me crying over this at my teenage years because all my friends would play out and I watched them from my window with a pile of books my mother would leave me to study and I grew up thinking it was unfair, she wanted me "perfect" so this so was hitted hard on me, I grew to go to the best university but left it within 1 year and moved abroad with the excuse of studying just to get away from my mother, enjoyed my 20s there worked but didn't want to study ever again in my life. @Jesus' little sparrow If that's a translation from the Catholic translation of the Bible, you might as well post the Latin Vulgate too. I can read that. The KJV is actually more accurate, IMO, and it's translated directly from the Greek New Testament, unlike St. Jerome's work. Anyway, even Satan can quote scripture, and I think your interpretation of the original verses are not only wrong but hurtful. Vade Satanas!

I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but this is the only song in Jagged Little Pill where Alanis is a bit 'off' in some notes. Sounds like it's a one take. Get it? It's imperfect. Wonderful.

Exactly how I grew up feeling, and my parents say they just wanted me to be happy and succesful. It goes back to how they were raised too. Messed up world we live in, I guess, wont change, because everyone expects you to be perfect

My dad used to play this song to me. English is his 2nd language and he took the song literally. He used it to tell me that I shouldn't make excuses. Now that I listen to it i realize it has a different meaning. He has high expectations -_-

This is how I feel about competitive gymnastics. I love my mom a lot but she can be hard to please. I did gymnastics and coached it for years, and years. I love that sport a lot. But it's really unrealistic to put those expectations on little kids . Some kids thrive in that but it's not for every kid... and ya there are a lot of great gymnastics careers that don't end in the Olympics or even college gymnastics. Lesson learned. I am not going to put unrealistic expectations on my kid. Seriously the journey is all that matters and he'll learn how to work hard by how I work, not me pushing him.

My mom used to be a tiger mom back then.She always wants me to be at top ten student at my class.I was good at my school, but once i ever blew up, i didn't make a good grades, and she didn't barely spoke with me for one week.
That was a mixed feeling during my teen, as an asian kid i raised to have a respect to parents, i love her, but at that time i also found myself sometimes hate her because of all her expectations to me. But eventually, i made a peace with her during my college until now. This song bring me to tears, hits me so bad, recall me when she always wanted me to be a perfect kid. I'm a mother now, i learn from my mom, i break the cycle, i won't do the same thing to my kid.
