Superman
Alanis Morissette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm lookin' for someone who can made me feel
A serious love like juliet's is real
A little impulsive and a boy at heart
A little bit shy but he'll be oh so smart

Superman I need a superman
You got a complicated girl like me
He's gotta be fair and treat me properly yeah
I want him to understand equality
You gotta keep searchin' everywhere in the world
You gotta keep lookin' or you'll miss the feelin'

[Chorus:]
You gotta be tough to make it today
You do it your way and not how they say
You'll find him somewhere
You gotta be tough to make it today
And never be scared of finding your way
To superman

Should I call him on the telephone
Should I go see him or just stay at home
Will be different from the other boys
If I could find him I'd be overjoyed

Superman where are the supermen
Whenever it seems like everything's on the line
You gotta keep lookin' or you'll miss the feelin'

[Chorus:]

With all the other boys I never knew
What it took to make a choice
When he's mine I'm gonna stop
All my changin' around now
Between the two of us there'll be
Enough goin' on that's serious
I can't wait 'til I can stop
All my lookin' around now

I found my superman I found my superman
Whenever it seems like everything's
On the line you gotta keep lookin' or
You'll miss the feelin'

[Chorus:]

Overall Meaning

In this song, Alanis Morissette is searching for a partner who understands and values the concept of equality. She alludes to the famous Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet, to describe the type of love she is looking for. She wants a partner who is impulsive like Romeo, but also smart enough to handle the complexities of a relationship. She emphasizes the need for a fair and equal relationship, where both partners are treated with respect. However, she also acknowledges that finding such a partner can be a daunting task and requires a certain level of perseverance.

The verses of the song reinforce the idea that finding love is not easy, and it takes a lot of effort and determination. There are times when you wonder whether you should take action or wait for the right person to come along. The chorus serves as a reminder to be resilient and stay on the lookout for your perfect match. Eventually, Morissette finds her superman, and the song ends on a positive note.

Oh my god I haven’t heard this in 3-4 years

@ryangomboc

better than most pop music today, love her duality -i love to dance-to this music-feel things deep in her newer material-glad i have both

@Jinaria101

@Ryan Gomboc I feel like her voice belongs to this kind of music more if only she was born just 4 years earlier her music would’ve been better suited in 1987 to 1989
1991 was not the best year for this kind of style and 1992 treated the style even worse

@ryangomboc

@Jinaria that sounds accurate for sure, the 80's style stayed in canada later ha and in 1993 and 1994 it died and then we got more dance type music that i love too

@PhilomathBret

*heard

@Jinaria101

@PhilomathBret i’ll fix it thanks for catching that

@Aquais97

I do prefer the pre-jagged little pill better, but Jagged little pill and newer is good as well.

@len1991100
