The Road
Alarm Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every day I get up from off the floor
I keep on coming back for more and more
So many times I get it in the face
I keep on running ' til my dying day

Rain on the roadway, thunder in the sky
The light of day disappears from sight
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind

I drive awake my eyes are on full beam
The wind is screaming into my slipstream
Something keeps pulling me back from sleep
Whatever it is I want to see

These wheels are burning up the road tonight
The fuel is pumping into my mind

As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind

I'll be there when it all comes down
I'll be there
I'll be there when it all comes down
I'll be there
When it all comes down

Come on, come on

As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind

The Road

Fuel pumping gasoline in my mind
From the engine to my body
This wheels on fire

The Road

As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind

The Road

Overall Meaning

In "The Road," The Alarm expresses the idea of perseverance and determination through the metaphor of driving down a road. The lyrics are full of images and lines that convey the struggles the artist has faced, as well as the pain and obstacles they have overcome. The artist sings about getting up every day despite being knocked down, about running until their dying day, and about facing constant challenges. The central idea of the song is that no matter what happens, the artist will keep going, and there is no limit to what they can achieve.

The song's chorus - "As the road opens up in front of my eyes, the only limitation is in my mind" - reinforces the message that the artist can achieve whatever they set their minds to, even if others doubt them. They describe the joys of driving at night, the adrenaline rush, and the sense of being alive. They could fall asleep at any moment, but something keeps them going - an indefinable force that fuels their spirit and drive.

It can be inferred that "The Road" is a song about self-discovery and a celebration of the human spirit's power to persevere despite adversity. The song speaks to the listener's inner strength and encourages them to keep pressing forward, even when faced with obstacles.

Saw The Alarm 53 times in concert between ‘84 and ‘86 all up and down the east coast (and then some)... My 8 year old grandson is now a 3rd generation Alarm fan so we’re spending hours watching their vids (next up drum lessons because Twist has replaced Ironman as his hero 😂) .. brings back tons of awesome memories

Going to see The Alarm tomorrow for the first time and I can't wait. Loved their music since I was a teenager (now 56) but never had the chance or the money to see them before. Proper excited.

A magical tune transporting me back to a magical period of my life: 1984, studying at college for my A'levels. I used to live a just a couple of miles from this studio where they are performing here. I was blown away by their performance at the Appollo theatre that summer. They were the first major live band I ever saw and they left an indellible impression in my soul that remains to this day and has influenced the man I have become.
