@Lefroy There is a point. See, just about everything around you is build/fabricated by humans. Your asphalt road, your couch, your house, your car, even the carriage you said you would have if you could. That means everything could fail, and everything could kill you. The asphalt could crack underneath you from a sinkhole. Your house could collapse. Your couch could break, impaling you on the wood in it. The carriage can break it's wheel so you fall on the ground and crack your skull. And even if everything in your life is going great, like in my case, life itself throws you a curveball sometimes and you're gonna die anyway.

Life is precious, yes. It's also not forever. When you're gonna die is never certain. That is only known to God. Or chance/faith/coincidence/destiny/whatever.

If you don't want to fly, don't fly. But also don't act like never flying is gonna solve humanity's appointment with death. Or that a person can choose (apart from suicide) how they'll die. Also don't act like flying is just to get to a beach quicker. It's not, and you know it.

As an airline mechanic myself, I pay VERY close attention when I work on primary flight controls. I've changed the stabilizer actuators on the ERJ before. They're better-designed than the one on the MDs I think. They have two parallel screws instead of one, and have a sealed oil reservoir instead of grease. But still, it's scary to know only four bolts are keeping that plane in the air. I take all the time I need to make sure it's installed 100% correctly, no matter how much the supervisor wants to rush us. I'll NEVER let sub-par maintenance hurt the people who fly on my planes.

Those poor pilots, imagine knowing that nothing you're doing is helping and you're responsible for all those people on the plane. It's shameful that cutting costs was done at the expense of all those lives. Those pilots really tried everything they possibly could, they were let down badly.

The plane was unflyable and the crew had a small chance to land safely regardless of the time frame...even immediately after takeoff would have been a tough landing.

@Lefroy you're probably right in a way. As a kid (6 to 18 yrs. old) I flew every year from EU to USA. And back then direct flights were very expensive so looking for best rates my mother always booked a stopover. So that's technically 4 flights a year. Now that I'm 33, married, with kids and not been flying anywhere for at least 10 years I'm starting to think like you. Although driving on the roads is far from being perfectly safe even if you as the driver always stay focused, never speeds or does anything dangerous there are other drivers out there that might not be so considerate. Best to not think to much about all that I guess.

That person that was a whistle-blower should be promoted & should be a hero. Exposing the airline shady practices and false maintenance records keeping. I've always felt the same. It's a riveting telling of flight 261. Great graphics and yes, the pilots made it feel so real. I want to visit the memorial the next time I'm in Southern Ca. and show my respect for all that perished and the families that are still here. They were so close to Los Angeles some would have seen safety. And one of the pilots who saw the plane upside down and twisting remarked to think that there were people inside. That is still upsetting if I think about that.

One of my childhood friends had family that were on that plane. I haven't talked to him in years but I believe it was his grandfather and aunt and uncle and his baby cousin. I could only imagine how painful it was for his parents to have to deal with such a loss. His mom wrote an entire book about the whole event and how devastating it was for her, even more so since he never got to meet some of his family members. It hits closer to home for me since I lost a friend in a separate plane crash when I was 10. It's sickening to know that poor maintenance and disgusting bureaucracy would lead to such a tragedy

My brother was driving us down the 101 back to LAX to catch our flight home and I was looking out the right side at the ocean. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this plane hit the water. I thought it was a small personal aircraft. Distance can make things deceiving. The huge plume of water was unreal.

Only when we arrived at the airport with the news crews everywhere, did I learn that it was in fact this Air Alaska plane. Still haunts me 22 years later. Just watched this episode today and cried non stop.

The pilots were absolutely amazing. They never ended their fight with the crippled MD-80. Even after the plane went into its final dive, they even tried to fly it while it was upside down. They fought till the very end. It’s sad that people who were responsible for keeping the plane safe and airworthy failed them.

I knew Ted and Bill. I took this flight from SFO to LAX 1 to 3 times a month regularly for business for a year or two. We would chat sometime before the flight. Ted learned to fly in the Air force and Bill in the Navy. Sometime the would joke about being on Bill and Teds excellent adventure. Don't get me wrong, they were serious professional pilots and felt safe and they could handle anything that happened. I felt safe with them at the wheel. They are part of the reason that was my first choice when booking a flight to LAX from SFO.
Once, I found about Alaska cheaping out on maintenance that caused the plane I rode on often to crash I stopped flying Alaska air.

The first nose dive was at a speed of 133 feet a second and the second dive from 18,000 feet was 300 feet a second. I can’t imagine what that felt like. Rest In Peace to all on board

Literally the only benefit would have been the amount of g forces the people would have been under would have kept them pressed into their seats when the plane went upside down, as opposed to just being thrown around the cabin. Other than that it's 100 percent horrific.

The production of this series is so good that, even though I know the plane crashed, I found myself rooting for the pilots in the reenactment. I was actually muttering, "Come on, come on. Roll it over." As always, very impressive.

Former military airframe mechanic here. Part of the reason (probably the largest) that I wanted to run full-speed away from that job was due to the definitive and absolute negligence of things exactly like greasing a jackscrew. I remember a senior sailor telling me once: "I wouldn't want to fly in these planes". 100% truth and the worst part about it, the corporate world in this tragedy doomed these folks in order to boost revenue....people with zero understanding of mechanics, aerodynamics and/or physics tottering on about making money. Never take your lives for granted folks.

I read somewhere that a passenger on another plane who was able to look out of the cabin at this plane plunging toward the Ocean that they were so traumitised by what they were witnessing they had to go for therapy .I cant even begin to imagine what the crew and passengers of this crashing plane went through!

I'm watching this on the 22 year anniversary of this tragedy. Even though I have absolutely no connection to this flight, aside from being from the area it was supposed to ultimately land, (Seattle, WA) this one really touched me. This has to be the most terrifying of all the air crash investigation videos I've seen. I was 12 years old when this happened and I remember hearing about it on the news vividly. The fact that the pilots didn't give up and tried to recover the plane all the way to the water is also something that really grips my heart. That can be a lesson to live by. Never give up. Always fight to the last. Whatever that last may be, give it your all.

These videos always end with the reassurance that lessons have been learned and that flying is safer because of the accident. If everyone is so interested in safety, then we have to wonder why John Liotine couldn't work in the industry anymore @ 42:18. You'd think someone like Southwest (LUV) would have hired the guy immediately. Yeah, I'm sure he would be kind of head strong, but isn't that what you want in a safety inspector? Their actions speak louder than their reports. They're afraid of anyone who stands up.

I flew to Puerto Vallarta two months before this happened on one of those MD80's, for all I know it may have been the one that crashed. They handed out ear plugs to those of us at the back of the jet because it was so blessedly loud from the engine noise, crazy! My buddy's wife is a flight attendant for Alaska and she knew the crew that died, what an horrific and sad ending for all those poor people all so Alaska Airlines could improve their bottom line, how utterly negligent and disgusting.

I feel like no matter what, if I comment someone will feel the need to tell me I'm wrong or attempt to enlighten me. I really didn't take your comment negatively and please don't take this as lashing out, I don't do that and really hate it when it's done to me but it's just a pattern I'm seeing on almost every subject. It seems no one can ever agree or agree to disagree even on the slightest use of a word, a thought, an opinion etc these days. You are more than welcome to believe in what and whomever you wish and you will never hear me say a negative word to anyone unless what they believe involves abusing children, poses a danger to people and other living beings and or is spreading hate. There are many good people in the world who do not accept him as their Lord and Saviour. I don't say this to upset you, it's simply fact. And there's nothing wrong with believing in reincarnation. For what it's worth, I do as well, I feel the reincarnation cycle is a way for our souls to grow, mature and become enlightened. Some reach their goals quicker than others, therefore they choose to not return, others still have a few things to spiritually iron out, thus they return with a clean slate and begin anew. I like the sentiment, but resting in eternal peace is not how I would describe it. Eternal rest implies no future life at all, and that’s just too sad. For those of us who believe in Heaven, we know that someday the people who choose Jesus will live again. The dead have no choice but to “rest in peace” because they are dead and are not aware of anything right now. I think it’s because the pilots seemed to have done everything they could have and communicated everything the whole way along and were essentially helpless the entire time. @Sunita Moses that’s all true. The Max 8 was really rushed because Boeing wanted to compete with Airbus’s Neos. Why it was poorly designed. They didn’t want to raise the landing gear to accommodate the bigger engine so they chose to lift the engines to get away from re-designing the entire plane. And like you said, compromised the aerodynamics.
All Boeing has cared about is money and trying to be on top. The saddest part is after the accidents, they didn’t even want to ground the planes. Whether the planes are safe to fly on now doesn’t even matter. It’s the point they chose competition and money over safety. They will forever have blood on their hands

Flying as a cabin crew for so many years just now after leaving the industry I'm able to watch this videos out of training classes. So disturbing and realistic the reconstruction of those events that only now I'm watching the full episodes hopping to not have nightmares. This crew fought bravely until the very end, unfortunately they could do nothing. If they had even a small chance, they were likely to succeed.

The only major mistake in my opinion, is that the stabilizer runaway procedure wasn't done properly (usually the pilots would land imediately within the closest airfield, without trying to change any configuration on the airplane). When the first officer did requested this procedure, it was too late.

They didnt have elevator control lol. They also didnt know what was wrong with the rear wing, other than the plane wanted to pitch down.

Keep in mind, its one thing to keep an airplane somewhat stabilized in a 5000 foot block, and landing a plane on a busy runway, over a MAJOR city. The pilots took time to try to go over the bay TO UNDERSTAND what they would need to do, to land, as well as dump fuel that could kill not only them, but anyone on the ground if they lost control of the aircraft.

Im not a fan of the Monday morning quarterbacking here. It wasnt simple as "lets go land!", and this accident could have been avoided. These guys were having MAJOR trouble just staying in a 5000 foot block, let alone getting to and landing at LAX.

That whistle-blower man is a hero, along with the pilots. He did the right thing in the face of others only wanting to count dollars. How horrible that an honest man is then denied his job and any further work in that industry he loves. You would think he would then be sought after as an honest and reliable employee whose mind was on safety first. To my way of thinking those who want corners cut and put people's lives at risk should be classed as murderers when such an accident happens. And why on earth could he not be employed in a government position! The reasoning is all so wrong.

I flew the airplane 12 days before it crashed. The aircraft is N964AS.
Just checked into my layover hotel in Fairbanks, when the call came to my room checking on me. My sister saw it on the news and called my family. A late night emergency inspection was made on each of the Aircraft. The next morning we had to fly out of Fairbanks. You should’ve seen the looks on the faces of the passengers as they boarded the aircraft that morning.

I remember this accident well, as I was living in the Bay Area. A popular local radio celebrity, Cynthia Oti, lost her life in the crash. She was scheduled to go on the air that evening.

That father's description of the eyewitness account by the beach goer is as chilling as it is sad. Let's hope the father got some relief having an idea of what his baby went through. I know that's a strange statement to make but the more we know, the wiser we become.Then comes peace❤

I can't imagine watching this happen, but if I did, I'd never tell anyone who'd had a loved one inside a doomed plane what I saw! What was that guy on the beach thinking, telling a father how his beloved child how terrifying her last minutes must've been. If the maintenance workers knew they were being asked to do anything wrong, and let it go, they are as guilty as the Nazi's were, in doing what superiors asked. It is sad that whistleblowers will lose their jobs, but better that, than carry guilt.

The actors portraying the pilots in this episode, Ray Kahnert and Barry Flatman, are amazing. Ray's captain in particular really makes the viewer get a glimpse of the horror and the adrenalin felt by them.

I know it seems morbid but I not only binge watch these, I repeat watch them as well.. With as tragic as some are the ones with survivors are true miracles and somewhat feel good outcomes!

And most survivors of crashes go on to fly again. My favorite advice is to "do it scared". Life is too short to not take your chances and see the world. You can die in your home, walking down the street, or on any mode of transportation. And the only thing we know is we all die someday and it's never pretty. If nothing else gets us, disease will. So I'll choose doing it scared til I can't any more.

@Anna Blackhurst -- pilots are also paid to think like a mechanic at times. If you keep overtightening a nut, you'll eventually get screwed.

@dabney offermein if your car were to suddenly break down on the highway there's no knowing how many lives you're responsible for. they had thousands of hours in that particular plane and they didn't have a check engine light, so they just thought it was jammed, not broken.

I'm addicted to this show. My mom thinks I'm crazy since we occasionally fly every year to Europe, but I'm learning what to pack and do in case I and hopefully my mother and sister survive a crash. Condolences to the Alaska flight❤️

You aren't crazy. You're learning about all the tragedies that happened to make flying the safe mode of travel it is today. 23 years ago was a long time, we've come incredibly far since then. You are more likely to die in a car crash on the way to or from the airport

Imagine flying a commercial passenger plane, you get told to look out because there is an uncontrollable plane around you, and the next thing you see is a plane take a nose dive. That must have been horrific to watch, especially as the passengers on the other plane

That reminds me of a guy that was skydiving and as he's on the way down, an airliner zips by right underneath him. He had a helmet cam on and you could see that if he'd jumped a second or 2 earlier, he could have crashed right into the plane.

I had a nightmare last night of literally getting into a plane crash after spinning in the plane and then going nose down and exploding and actually dying …. It was literally terrifying 😩🥺 I need to stop binge watching this show before bed ….

When they start off the program that this story was based on forensics, and eyewitness accounts, you kind of know the ending.

Usually when there are survivors of these type of programs, they get a few to interview for it.

Every minute of watching this I hope that somehow they manage to save it, and I think maybe this time it's different. Of course this isn't possible but there is always that little hope in the back of my mind.

It’s so heartbreaking that these pilots done everything humanly possible to save the plane from crashing. The pilots were experienced in flying 18 and 15 years but there was nothing they could do because the jackscrew was damaged fadaie who worked for Alaska 13 years was fired for going to superiors and complained that maintenance wasn’t doing their job right and there hadn’t been a completed tool inspection on the jackscrew that led to him being fired after the crash the FAA became aware of this and if this tool inspection would have been completed 88 people wouldn’t have died. It makes me wonder how this guy who was doing his job got fired but the others kept their job. Of course after the investigation this guy was paid for the stress of losing his job and an apology letter. So sad 😞 for the families and the pilots for doing a heroic job!
