Ae Fond Kiss
Albannach Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ae fond kiss and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, and then for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
Naething could resist my Nancy:
But to see her was to love her;
Love but her, and love for ever.

Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
Never met - or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare-thee-weel, though first and fairest!
Fare-thee-weel, though best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure!

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!

Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Overall Meaning

In Albannach's song "Ae Fond Kiss," the singer is bidding farewell to their beloved with a heavy heart. The repetition of "ae fond kiss" emphasizes the fleeting nature of their final moment together before they are forced to part ways forever. The singer expresses their deep sorrow through heart-wrung tears, sighs, and groans. The star of hope has left the singer, and they are surrounded by dark despair. Despite this, the singer cannot blame their fondness for Nancy, as loving her was inevitable. The final stanza sees the singer wishing their beloved well, hoping that they will find joy, treasure, peace, enjoyment, love, and pleasure.

The song is a poignant portrayal of the pain of farewell, with its refrain and simple melody serving to emphasize the simplicity of the message. However, the song is not just a mournful lament for a lost love, but also a celebration of the intensity and power of that love. Despite the sadness, the singer is grateful for having experienced the kind of love that is worth loving forever. The song speaks to the universal human experience of love, loss, and the inescapable pain of goodbye.

Beautiful love song it's one of my favourite Burns songs, and sung beautifully by the lovely Fiona Kennedy ❤

A very beautiful rendition of Ae Fond Kiss. She also sings it on the Highland Heart DVD and CD. Fairly simple accompaniment and straightforward performance, not overdone, clearly enunciated and with great charm.

Up there with the most beautiful love songs ever written. Burns was a genius. Lovely performance by Fiona Kennedy.

It’s a lyric poem not intentionally a love song 🎵

Fabulous. Most perfectly sung version I’ve heard. My dad and your dad were friends in the world of music and beyond. Now both sadly gone. Fiona. Nee Campbell (Oban)

I remember Fiona Kennedy from when she was about 12. She sang the title music (Dream Angus) and played the title role in the BBC's dram,a "The Witch's Daughter". I wish we'd had video in those days - I just taped her singing: it was wonderful.
