I have several relatives in the area around that prison, sometimes referred to as Cedar Junction. DeSalvo was one of the inmates who made things in the shop for sale to the public. One Christmas, my brother thought it would be a neat joke to buy our mother a necklace made by "The Boston Strangler." It wasn't a choker, but it did have a card with the autograph made by Albert DeSalvo. This is all true, and I respectfully request Dr. Grande to comment on my Brother's possible state of mind for coming up with such a jest.

@Diane Ellis In Titicut? I don't remember his being held there, but that would make sense. I know that Cedar Junction [a.k.a. Norfolk, a.k.a. Walpole] had a shop and I thought my brother had bought it there because he lived in the town nearby, but I doubt he'd remember if I asked. Do you remember if they were really "chokers" and whether he put "The Boston Strangler" under his name on the card?

The last victim was known to entertain men and very easily could have picked up DeSalvo. The other murders were too varied. The cops never thought it was him and neither do most of us around here. I've avoided the "you could be a model" trick several times. I grew up in a sort of rough area, I'm naturally suspicious of strangers trying to talk to me. From what I've heard from others, it's usually porn scouts, but one guy wanted to take pics of me in the desert. My first thought was serial rapist/killer. Hard pass.

I read somewhere that not only did the police think that there was more than one killer due to the age range of victims and the variations in how they were killed, but also similar murders continued for a time after DeSalvo was incarcerated... maybe a copy cat or maybe he wasn’t the Strangler after all...

Nice talk Doc. I spent 10 years as a police detective in uk. I discovered that some incarcerated people would confess to crimes they did not comit to gain favor as this helps the police so they think it will help them too especially if they are on remand. Also high profile crimes are confessed by lifers to gain status. So if the subject of your talk confessed I do not see that as a plus for guilt per se.

On a more serious note, a poster on another board I patronize said he grew up in Germany with Albert DeSalvo's kids. It was well known that his wife divorced him after he was charged with being the Boston Strangler, and relocated back to her native Germany with the kids. (They had met when he was stationed there in the Army.) The kids were preschoolers, and were told that their father had died in a car accident, and only found out the truth as young adults. Of course, they were completely traumatized.

I used to work at the Post Office as a mail carrier. Once the other carrier flew into a rage because he didn’t have enough rubber bands. He accused me of taking his rubber bands! Scarcity can do weird things to people....

If we're going to discuss possible pork-related motives, we must remember that there was no scrawled message, "stop me before I grill again," which seems to weaken that argument. Seriously, after everything I've read over the years, I can't help thinking that DeSalvo was not THE Boston Strangler, if in fact there was only one. The only DNA evidence linked him to the killing of Mary Sullivan, who was believed to be the last Strangler victim, so if guilty, perhaps he was copy-catting, All in all, the Boston Strangler case will probably be a basis for lively discussion for decades to come.
