In 1960, he started in music with Gibraltarian band 'The Diamond Boys', which had no real commercial success, but played a part in Spain's introduction to popular music. In 1966 Hammond co-founded the British vocal group The Family Dogg, scoring a UK Top 10 hit with "A Way of Life" in 1969. He is probably best known for his early 70s hits "It Never Rains In Southern California" and 'Free Electric Band' - but he went on to write countless hits for other artists such as Madonna and Leo Sayer. In 1987, Hammond's composition with Diane Warren "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" (recorded by Jefferson Starship) was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy. He is immortalised in song by Half Man Half Biscuit in their 1986 track "Albert Hammond Bootleg".

I Don't Wanna Die in an Air Disaster
Albert Hammond Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The pressure gives me thrills as we climb in the air
And I love to watch the clouds and the mountains and the sky
Swish around a cocktail the stewardess brings by
Lord, this is the life for me
Lord, oh lord, this is the life for me
But I don't wanna die in an air disaster
I don't wanna die on a plane
Well, I fishtail through the lane and I make my tires squeal
Power at my feet and the glory at the wheel
And I wind the windows down
Let the wind blow through my hair
God knows where I'm going but me, I don't care
Lord, this is the life for me
Lord, oh lord, this is the life for me
But I don't wanna die in a freeway pile-up
I don't wanna die on the road
Well, I'm young and I'm pretty and I wanna stay that way
Wanna be desirable 'till my dying day
I don't wanna be bedridden, an old and bitter sage
Have the nurses saying I'm young for my age
"He's young for his age"
Oh lord, don't let me go that way
Lord, oh lord, don't let me go that way
No, don't make me go like a fading chorus
Don't make me fade like a song
Lord, have mercy on your son
Lord, oh lord, oh lord, have mercy on me 'cause I don't wanna die in an air disaster
And I don't wanna die in a freeway pile-up
And I don't wanna go like a fading chorus
And I don't wanna die for no good reason
And I just wanna go on and on
The first verse of "I Don't Wanna Die in an Air Disaster" by Albert Hammond depicts the thrill and excitement experienced while flying. The engines spitting fire and the pressure giving thrills as the plane climbs in the air. The singer enjoys watching the beautiful scenery outside the plane and having a swig of a cocktail brought by the stewardess. The verse paints a picture of someone who loves living the good life but is afraid of facing a sudden death caused by an air disaster. The persona admits that he does not want to die on a plane or any form of air disaster.
In the second verse of the song, the singer talks about cruising on the highway in his car. He feels free and enjoys the sense of power and control that comes with driving. He loves the wind blowing through his hair as he speeds without caring where he is headed. He admits that he does not want to die in a freeway pile-up or any form of road accidents.
The chorus of the song reiterates the message of the persona's fear of sudden death. He does not want to be bedridden or be old and bitter. His wish is to remain young and desirable until his dying day. He pleads with the lord to have mercy on him and not make him go like a fading chorus, song, or die for no good reason. He just wants to go on and on enjoying his life.

😥 Now living in the quite strange, weird, discutabele and unreliable twenties. 56 years old now and not necessarily more happy than in the dreamy, carefree and steady seventies, back then. Memories folks, just very much and very great memories folks😢 Sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock⏱...
