Lee first experienced commercial success as the lead guitarist with Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds. Quitting the Thunderbirds in 1968, Lee joined Heads Hands & Feet in 1969 until the breakup in 1973.
In 1974 Lee left the UK for Los Angeles, California, and joined The Crickets through his friend bassist Rick Grech (of Blind Faith). The band cut three albums together including A Long Way From Lubbock. By then Lee was receiving many offers of session work. In 1976, Lee was asked to join Emmylou Harris's Hot Band, replacing one of his heroes, James Burton, who was returning to perform with Elvis Presley. Starting in 1978, Lee worked for five years with Eric Clapton, playing and singing for a live concert recording at the Budokan in Japan.
Lee was responsible for The Everly Brothers 1983 reunion concert and was its musical director. He played regularly with the Everlys for over twenty years.
In 1987, Lee was invited by Gerry Hogan to headline at a steel guitar festival in Newbury, Berkshire. Lee was at first intimidated by the prospect of having to front a band, however, the gig was successful and he now tours with Hogan's Heroes on a regular basis.
A new Albert Lee and Hogan's Heroes album entitled Like This was released in spring 2008 to coincide with their European tour. Lee continues to work in the studio and tours on a regular basis with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings.

Let me live my life free and easy
Put a toothbrush in my hand
And let me be a travellin' man
Cause I'm a road runner baby
I'm a road runner baby
Can't stay in one place too long
One look at me and I'll be gone
Well you can love me if you wanna
But I do declare
When I get restless, I've got to move somewhere
Cause I'm a road runner baby
Anywhere is my home
And I love the life I live
And I'm gonna live the life I love
A road runner baby
Don't want no woman
To tie me down
Got to be free baby
To roam around
All my life I've been like this
And if you love me it's your own risk
Cause when the dust hits my shoes
I've got the urge to move
Yes I'm a road runner baby
Got to keep movin' on
Hey, and I live the life I love
And I love the life I live
I'm a road runner baby
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Don't want no woman
To tie me down
Got to be free baby
To roam around
All my life I've been like this
And if you love me it's your own risk
Cause when the dust hits my shoes
I've got the urge to move
Yes I'm a road runner baby
Got to keep movin' on
Hey, and I live the life I love
And I love the life I live
I'm a road runner baby
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
The lyrics to Albert Lee's song "Road Runner" speak of a restless spirit that cannot be confined to one place for too long. The singer rejects the idea of being tied down by material possessions and relationships, instead preferring to live free and easy, with only a toothbrush and a wanderlust as constant companions. He considers himself a "road runner baby," always on the move, never in one place for too long. He acknowledges that this lifestyle may not be for everyone, but for him, it is the only way to truly live.
The song's message is one of self-discovery and the pursuit of personal freedom. The singer rejects societal norms and pressures, choosing instead to follow his own path and live life on his own terms. The lyrics are simple but powerful, inspiring listeners to embrace their own inner road runner and chase their dreams, even if it means leaving behind the comforts of a settled life.
Overall, "Road Runner" is a classic rock song that speaks to the restless spirit in all of us. Its message of personal freedom and self-discovery remains just as relevant today as it did when the song was first released.
