Black and Blue
Albert Nichols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold empty bed, springs hard as lead
Pains in my head, feel like old Ned
What did I do to be so black and blue?

No joys for me, no company
Even the mouse ran from my house
All my life through I've been so black and blue
I'm white inside, but that don't help my case
'Cause I can't hide what is on my face
I'm so forlorn. Life's just a thorn
My heart is torn. Why was I born?
What did I do to be so black and blue?

I'm hurt inside, but that don't help my case
'Cause I can't hide what is on my face
How will it end? Ain't got a friend
My only sin is in my skin
What did I do to be so black and blue?
Tell me, what did I do?
What did I do? What did I do?
What did I do? What did I do?
What did I do? What did I do?

What did I do? Tell me, what did I do to be so black and blue?
What did I do to be so black and blue?

Overall Meaning

The song "Black and Blue" by Albert Nichols is a poignant and insightful exploration of the black experience in a largely racist society. The song is delivered in a slow and melancholic blues style, with evocative lyrics that capture the pain and frustration of being black in a society that devalues and discriminates against people of color.

The first verse of the song sets the tone for the rest of the piece, describing a lonely and difficult existence. The singer describes himself as feeling like "old Ned" - a phrase that suggests a sense of weariness and resignation. He wonders why he has been treated so poorly, and why he is "so black and blue." The second verse expands on this theme, describing the singer's isolation and lack of companionship. He is so alone that even a mouse runs from his house. The repetition of the phrase "all my life through" suggests a sense of inevitability and hopelessness.

The chorus of the song offers a powerful commentary on the internal and external experiences of racism. The singer is "white inside" - that is, he has the same internal experiences and emotions as any other human being. However, his skin color sets him apart and exposes him to discrimination and prejudice. He is forlorn and his heart is torn as he wonders why he was born with a skin color that causes him so much pain and difficulty. The final verse of the song is perhaps the most heartbreaking, with the singer wondering how his life will end without a friend to turn to. He feels that his "only sin is in [his] skin," once again highlighting the idea that racial discrimination is a sin not of the victims but of the perpetrators.

Overall, "Black and Blue" is a powerful song that offers a penetrating look at the black experience in America. It remains relevant today, as people of color continue to face discrimination and violence in a society that refuses to see them as equals.

Your eyes may be whole
But the story I'm told
Is that your heart is as black as night
Your lips may be sweet
Such that I can't compete
But your heart is as black as night
I don't know why you came along
At such a perfect time
But if I let you hang around
I'm bound to lose my mind
'Cause your hands may be strong
But the feeling's all wrong
Your heart is as black as night
I don't know why you came along
At such a perfect time
But if I let you hang around
I'm bound to lose my mind
Cause your hands may be strong
But the feeling's all wrong
Your heart is as black
Your heart is as black
Oh, your heart is as black as night
Ah-ah oh

The people that know, know!
And the people who don't will just have to put up with second or third best..

@igorpust6564

But she is very famous. But her music is not a pop, isn't it?

@jamieshinn4355

My guess is that, because she has struggled with addiction and bipolar episodes in the past, she may have missed some opportunities but also she seems like a woman who is going to do her music her way no matter what she’s told plus she’s been married to her road manager for 20+ years and he knows what she can handle maybe???? I’m just speculating here but she is very well known in Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, and a few other European countries as well as New Zealand.
