Sur l'océan couleur de fer
Alcest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sur l'océan couleur de fer
Pleurait un choeur immense
Et ces longs cris dont la démence
Semble percer l'enfer

Et puis la mort, et le silence
Montant comme un mur noir
Parfois au loin se laissait voir
Un feu qui se balance

Overall Meaning

The song "Sur L'ocean Couleur De Fer" by Alcest features an emotionally intense and evocative depiction of a setting characterized by dark and ominous imagery. The opening line, "Sur l'océan couleur de fer" (On the ocean of iron color), sets the tone for a bleak and unforgiving environment. The subsequent lines describe a vast chorus of lamentation, as if the ocean itself were crying out in despair. The sense of madness and despair reaches a fever pitch with the description of long, tortured cries that seem to pierce through to the very depths of hell.

Despite this overwhelming sense of despair, there is also a sense of mystery and intrigue throughout the song. The lines "Et puis la mort, et le silence/Montant comme un mur noir" (And then death, and silence/Rising like a black wall) suggest a sudden and violent end, yet the final lines hint at the possibility of some hidden light or beacon of hope. "Parfois au loin se laissait voir/Un feu qui se balance" (Sometimes far away could be seen/A fire that sways) conjures up a sense of distant hope or perhaps even a sense of redemption.

Overall, "Sur l'océan couleur de fer" is a complex and compelling song that captures both the crushing despair and the glimmers of hope in seemingly hopeless situations.

On the iron-coloured ocean
Cried an immense choir
And those long screams whose insanity
Seemed to pierce through hell

And then death, and silence
Rising like a black wall
... Sometimes, in the distance, can be seen
A swaying fire

Cried an immense choir
And those long screams whose insanity

And then death and silence,
Rising just like a black wall
...Sometimes, in the distance, could be seen
A swaying fire

If you're not listening to this song at midnight with your eyes closed and all the lights off you're doing it wrong. Get it together!

It sounds beautiful no matter when and where you're listening to it. Eating spicy ramen? This. Not sleepy? This. Angry? This. Tired? This. Breathing? This

my mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, she only had the courage to reveal it to the family in 2017, we ran against the time for her to have a chance. During the chemotherapy period, she slept listening to this song, even the house cats. Nowadays she has metastasis, I do not know the day she's go, but this song will be kept deep in my heart.

Idk if she's still here with you but please cherish every moment you have while it lasts so that you don't end up asking a multitude of "what if"s like me.
